Human Race Being Terminated By ‘Scientific Suicide’

(NaturalNews) This is, without question, the most important article I've ever penned, because it discusses the idea that the human race is being destroyed in the name of science.

 

Stopping these "scientists" from destroying our world and our civilization must become our top priority if we hope to survive.

The entire Northern hemisphere is now imminently threatened by a massive, "global killer" radiation release from failing Fukushima reactor No. 4. Our world is right now just one earthquake away from a radiological apocalypse, and we were put into this position by scientists who promised us that nuclear power would be safe and inexpensive.

Even as we live under the immediate threat of Cesium-137-induced radiological extinction, another group of genetic scientists threatens the future of our world with self-replicating genetic pollution. These scientists work for Monsanto, Dupont and other biotech firms that have compromised the future of life on Earth in order to seek their own selfish profits. Bill Gates and all the others who have promoted GMOs and allowed them to be unleashed into our world are guilty of nothing less than crimes against both the human race and nature itself. They are a threat to the continuation of life on Earth and must be stopped.

In the realm of human biology, our very existence is now being widely threatened by toxic vaccines. Always promoted in the name of "science," these vaccines actually cause severe neurological damage and widespread infertility, compromising the ability of members of the human race to reproduce.

And in terms of our global food supply, the accelerating collapse of the honey bees is now solidly linked to the widespread use of chemical pesticides manufactured by pharmaceutical companies (http://www.naturalnews.com/034678_honey_bees_colony_collapse_pesticid…). These pesticides, of course, are always promoted in the name of "science!" It's better living through chemistry, remember?

In fact, if you take an honest look at what threatens our civilization and our planet today, it's always something done in the name of science!

Death by science
• Toxic pesticides that kill the soils and rivers? "Science!"

• Toxic chemical medications that kill humans and pollute downstream waters? "Scientific!"

• The mass poisoning of the population with a toxic combination of industrial waste products called "fluoride?" It's all done for "science!"

• Nuclear bombs that have already decimated civilian populations? "Science!"

• Mammograms and other medical imaging devices that actually cause cancer? "Scientific!"

• Chemotherapy poisons, "preventive" mastectomies, cancer radiation treatments? It's all "scientific" of course.

• The mass mercury poisoning of children through dental amalgams? They call it "science-based dentistry!"

What's clear from all this is that the human race is being murdered in the name of science.

But underneath that realization is an even more profound one: Much of the so-called "science" is really just fraudulent science that's twisted, distorted and quacked up by greed-driven corporations.

Real science is the quest for understanding, not the quest for profit
Real science is a good thing, as it is based on the quest for knowledge. But today, there's not much real science being conducted anymore. Most of what takes place is corporate-driven science for the purpose of gaining power and profits.

In medicine, for example, the search for new drugs is not about helping humanity; it's about helping quarterly profits. But you already knew that. Only the most naive individuals today still believe Big Pharma cares about human beings.

In the world of GMOs, it's not about actually "feeding the world" as is ridiculously claimed by its corrupt, criminal pushers; it's actually about "owning the world" and using food as a weapon against the People of the world. He who controls the food supply eventually controls everything. Monsanto is hell bent on world domination, not world nourishment.

Vaccines, for their part, aren't about actually preventing disease and enhancing the health of the public. Infectious disease prevention could be easily accomplished through sanitation improvements and low-cost vitamin D supplementation. Vaccines are really about two things: 1) Population control, 2) Repeat business for the drug industry due to all the vaccine damage caused by inoculations. (Vaccines damage the liver, kidneys, brain and intestines, among other organs.)

The "science" practiced today is a science of domination and control. It is almost never carried out for humanitarian purposes to benefit humankind. Even the entire intellectual property "ownership" system of patents and trademarks is set up to grant corporate monopolies over innovation, thereby denying the People access to such innovations. Intellectual property laws have been twisted and exploited by corporate giants to hijack the innovation process and use it to crush competition. All corporations ultimately want a global monopoly over their particular industry sectors.

Universities, which once conducted research to benefit humankind, now use taxpayer money to develop patentable chemicals that are then licensed to drug companies (or pesticide companies) in exchange for royalties that enrich the university.

As a result of such trends, "science" has come to mean corruption, dishonesty, greed and death. "Scientists" — the people who practice such science — are death engineers whose innovations may deliver hyped-up short-term benefits, but they often ultimately lead to long-term death and destruction. Roundup herbicide, for example, kills crop soils and encourages the development of pesticide-resistant "superweeds." In the terrain of human biology, much the same ramification of death and destruction is happening with the widespread abuse of antibiotics and the alarming rise of MRSA and other "superbugs."

Such "scientific" innovations were, of course, developed by well-meaning people who didn't mean to cause widespread crop failures and antibiotic-resistant staph infections, but in doing so they only became experts in paving the road to Hell with good intentions.

Science is killing us. As a race, we are committing suicide by allowing science to dominate our medicine, agriculture and military industries. To the degree that we allow scientists to unleash their dangerous experiments onto the world without legitimate testing — and no, flu shot vaccines are never scientifically tested for long-term safety — we only accelerate the digging of our own graves. If we don't learn to restrain the blind ambitions of arrogant scientists who are all too easily enticed by the chance to roll the dice in their "let's play God" games, the blind pursuit of science without wisdom will only lead to our total destruction.

Because next we can count on the rise of the robot drones in the name of science — a new race of Terminator machines (unmanned AI drones) with the capability to mindlessly unleash bombs and bullets on civilian populations. Such drones will be developed in the name of "science," of course, with all the predictable ego-driven fantasies of their geek-headed inventors who, with all their superior intellect, have still failed to study human history.

Even if the drones don't get us, nanotechnology may yet spell our demise. Scientists are already running dangerous experiments with nanotechnology, and if just one such experiment results in a self-replicating nanotech "grey goo," our entire world could be inescapably devoured by self-replicating microscopic machines that make GMOs seem tame by comparison. If we are to survive, we must force science to be bound by the Precautionary Principle
If we are to survive the endless greed, arrogance and ambition of today's scientists — whose actions more closely resemble little children with flamethrowers than mature, adult individuals — we must force science to abide by the Precautionary Principle.

The Precautionary Principle means that when we experiment with nature, we force ourselves to err on the side of caution, not profits. In practical terms, that means we should never unleash self-replicating genetic programs (GMOs) into the open world and let experimental seeds get blown across the continent by the wind.

We should never build highly radioactive nuclear power facilities that require power to run pumps in order to avoid a nuclear meltdown. Such facilities must be designed to run in a grid-down, self-shutdown format that defaults to an unmanned state of non-criticality.

We should never unleash synthetic chemicals across the world's crops and soils to kill insects, not knowing the long-term ramifications of such neurotoxins being introduced into the ecosystem.

The Precautionary Principle recognizes that human civilization is fragile, and science-sounding experiments can run amok in ways that simply cannot be anticipated by even the most brilliant and well-intentioned human minds.

Technology without wisdom is suicide
In the name of science, humanity has developed remarkable technologies. But as a species, humankind operates as infants in terms of wisdom and maturity. We are worse than children with flamethrowers — we are children with nukes!

A typical top-level scientist working for a corporation or a government body is ethically under-developed, lacking wisdom and perspective. They may be geniuses in their absurdly narrow realms of technical expertise, but they have no understanding of the importance of restraining the application of scientific pursuits in the real world. Even now, scientists working at the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva are playing God with the universe, attempting to discover what they ridiculously call new "particles" even though such particles are not even particles in the first place. In their quest for what they claim to be scientific knowledge, they are playing a dangerous game with our world, risking the very small but catastrophically fatal chance that their experiment might create a planet-consuming black hole that devours our world. Sound like science fiction? Most conventional scientists dismiss such ideas as pure nonsense. But their colleagues also told us that nuclear power was safe; that GMOs are safe; that pesticides are safe; that fluoride is safe; that vaccines are safe; and on and on. If there's one thing we can scientifically establish as truth in our world today, it's that scientists vastly and naively overestimate the safety of their own experiments, often in ways that cause widespread harm, death or destruction to innocent people around them.

Scientists are a danger to our world, in other words. And they need to be immediately restrained before they utterly destroy the very conditions on our planet that make human life possible.

History has taught us that scientists have very little ability to anticipate the long-term effects of their present-day actions. The nature of the universe is more complex than even the most brilliant scientist can imagine, it turns out, and when they start to play God with the natural world, unexpected things can and do occur. Murphy was an optimist, as the saying goes. Not only will things go wrong if they can go wrong; they will go wrong in catastrophic ways that simply cannot be anticipated.

The sixth mass extinction on our planet may be caused by science itself

Do Hidden Opiates In Our Food Explain Food Addictions?

Food addictions are not strictly "psychological" problems, but have a hard-wired, organic component.  Many of the most commonly consumed foods in Western culture actually contain narcotic properties associated with the presence of psychoactive chemicals that bind to opioid receptors in the nervous system.  These peptides are so powerful that researchers block their action with drugs such as naltrexone which is used to treat addiction among heroin abusers, and naloxone which is used to prevent death from heroin overdose.

These "food opiates" are heavily concentrated in wheat and dairy products, especially cow’s milk. Wheat contains the following opioid peptides, known as gluten exorphins, alongside which are listed their amino acid structure:

It can be argued that many of the most popular foods consumed in Western culture are done so not primarily for their nutritive value but rather for their addictive properties. Some of these foods we become truly infatuated with and are identified as "comfort foods," that are "to die for," or that we "love."

Food opiates are widely distributed throughout our diet, and are found in many unsuspecting places.  Fructose, which is fast becoming the primary source of calories in the American diet, while not itself an opioid peptide, is known to increase brain levels of endogenous morphine following ingestion,[1][2]and may produce metabolic products in the brain very similar to those produced by morphine.[3]  In fact, it has been identified to stimulate a "hedonic pathway" in the brain, not unlike alcohol, which incidentally is metabolized along the same liver pathways.[4] Fructose, in isolated or concentrated form, is highly toxic and have been linked to over 70 health conditions.

Some other common food opiates include

  • Spinach: popular leafy green contains two opioid peptides named rubiscolins-5 and -6.[5][6]
  • Coffee: the oil known as cafestrol which is found in both decaffeinated and caffeinated coffee contains potent morphine-like activity.[7] Many of coffee’s effects therefore may be mediated via opiate receptors, as well as the effects of caffeine. [8]
  • Rice protein: rice albumin may have opioid properties, depending on how thoroughly it is digested; incomplete digestion may increase the likelihood of there being a pharmacologically active effect.
  • Meat and Fish Protein: when complex animal proteins are enzymatically degraded some exhibit opiate-like properties. Some of these "biogenic peptides" as they are known have been investigated for their potential role in the treatment and prevention of hypertension.[9]
  • Chocolate: One of the well-known mechanisms behind cocoa’s cardioprotective activity is the ability of epicatechin to act via opioid receptors, specifically through the δ-opioid receptor, to produce cardiac protection from injury associated with low oxygen.[10]  Animal feeding studies also show that the opiate-blocking drug naloxone reduces chocolate cravings, suggesting that some of chocolate’s desirable qualities may be related to their opiate activity in the nervous system.[11]
  • Sugar: As mentioned above fructose has opiate-like properties, but so does sucrose (table sugar) and glucose. Since starch as found in "complex carbohydrates" is hidden sugar and often technically higher on the glycemic index than actual sugar (e.g. puffed rice makes the blood sweeter than white sugar), even grains may elicit addictive behaviors through the modulation of opioid pathways in the brain.

While many of our most commonly consumed foods and beverages contain food opiates, our original infatuation with opiate peptides actually begins at birth, as is nature’s inherently intelligent design. Being born into the world an extremely underdeveloped mammal (i.e. compared to horses we take years longer to gain independence),* the biological imperative is for there to be a strong bond between mother and offspring consummated in the act of breastfeeding.

Breast milk, therefore, contains actual morphine. This is to ensure that a very close bond forms and that the offspring will seek out and obtain nourishment by garnishing physical dependency.

The fact that our first food — breast milk — contains opiates and that the biosynthetic pathway for morphine exist in tissues such as the liver, blood and brain, indicate that our species was destined to be drawn to substances that either mimic the action of opiates, or modulate their secretion and/or activity within our bodies.[12]

Ultimately, many food opiates are consumed in order to self-medicate. Coffee, for instance, has profound psychoactive properties that cannot be reduced to its caffeine content alone. The opiate-like property of coffee explains why it may relax and/or reduce stress in certain people, raising the threshold of anxiety or aggression in a way quite opposite to what would be expected from the effects of caffeine alone.

This effect may be maintained as long as coffee is administered continuously, like any other pharmacologically drug. However, if suddenly withdrawn, some experience symptoms identical to those associated with withdrawal from opiate drugs.

In addition, many food opiates, such as are found in wheat and cow’s milk products, entice us to consume foods that are intrinsically unhealthy. Wheat, for instance, has been linked to over 160 health conditions, and cow’s milk is known to be a risk factor for type 1 diabetes. But both are consumed globally in the billions of pounds and lauded as "health foods" by the unsuspecting masses unaware of the addictive hold they may have on them. The Dark Side of Wheat and cow's milk is rarely acknowledged, though the role of food opiates may shed some much needed light on the topic.

The point is that food is not just a "fuel" for the body, as classically defined through nutritional reductionism. It has profound genoregulatory and neuroendocrine modulating properties. One of the best ways to ascertain whether food opiates are affecting your health is to embark on an elimination diet. Sometimes following a gluten or cow's milk free diet, the physiological shackles are thrown off, and it is possible to experience renewed health and vitality.

Many seemingly unrelated health conditions may improve and/or go into remission. When the food is reintroduced months later, it is far easier to feel its true effects on the body — adverse effects that were always there, but due to their chronic consumption were considered normal.

*an interesting fact of evolutionary biology is that our head size has grown so large in proportion to our hip size that we must be born with a relatively underdeveloped body in order to make it through the birth canal.  This ensures that a great proportion of our development must occur outside of the womb, making our dependence on milk much more intense.

For the same reason that human breast milk contains morphine, the casomorphins in cow's milk are intended to sedate/placate/anesthetize calves born into the wild. Is it any surprise that humans (whose poignantly aware brains contain as many neurons as stars in our galaxy!) are the only mammals who never stop weaning themselves from this narcotic elixir? Perhaps we dope and dumb ourselves down with these opiate peptides in order not to go insane from the poignant awareness that such a huge brain generates.

Obesity. No, we're not kidding.

In fact, new analyses of data surrounding obesity reveal that it is costing the nation twice as much in medical bills as previously thought – even more than smoking.

How bad is the problem? Because of obesity, cars burn a billion gallons more of fuel a year than if we, as a nation, still averaged what we weighed in 1960. Hospitals, Reuters reports, are removing wall-mounted toilets in favor of "load-bearing" floor models. And the Federal Transit Administration is looking at testing buses for the impact of heavier riders on steering and breaking.

But perhaps the biggest cost to the nation is in terms of healthcare spending, which has been rising exponentially and which climbed another 5.8 percent in 2011, according to Standard & Poor's Financial Services.

Laws, policy changes coming to address the problem?

Some costs are neutral, such as larger seats in sports arenas and in public places. But most are not; they are what are known as higher health insurance premiums and higher taxpayer-supported healthcare costs in the form of Medicare and Medicaid expenditures. And all at a time of shrinking budgets and skyrocketing government debt.

The rising costs of obesity, which are increasingly being borne by the non-obese, could become the well-documented epidemic's second-hand smoke, according to Reuters. Only when doctors and researchers learned that it, too, was causing lung cancer, did policymakers respond.

Well, for obesity and the economic impact it is having on American society, that "second-hand smoke" moment has arrived.

"As committee chairmen, Cabinet secretaries, the head of Medicare and health officials see these really high costs, they are more interested in knowing, 'what policy knob can I turn to stop this hemorrhage?'" Michael O'Grady of the National Opinion Research Center told Reuters. O'Grady is the author of a new report called the Campaign to End Obesity, "which brings together representatives from business, academia and the public health community to work with policymakers on the issue," the Newswire reported.

In fact, they have already begun to turn the policy knob. President Obama's signature 2010 healthcare reform law contains a provision that allows employers to charge obese workers 30-50 percent more in premiums, if they are not involved in some sort of wellness (exercise?) program. Even if the law does not survive the Supreme Court intact, obesity will continue to drive healthcare costs upward, forcing lawmakers and policy wonks to devise ways to trim their healthcare expenditures, at the public's behest.

Nothing new to see here, folks

The epidemic that is obesity is well-documented and stretches back for years. In fact, it trends remarkably close to the dramatic rise of fast and processed foods in the country.

Since 1960, the percentage of Americans who are considered obese – those with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 percent or higher – has tripled to 34 percent. Cases of "morbid" obesity – those with BMIs of 40 percent or higher – has increased sixfold. Meanwhile, the percentage of Americans considered "overweight" (BMIs of 25-29.9 percent) has generally held steady, but that percentage, say experts, is still too high.

It's really not an equation that is hard to figure out. As waistlines increase, so, too, to the incidents of medical problems – heart trouble, diabetes, high blood pressure, to name a few – that go along with obesity. More obese people mean more medical problems which means more healthcare expenditures.

Besides raising insurance costs for employers, workers who are obese miss more days on the job – overweight men take 5.9 more sick days a year and women take 9.4 more sick days per year, on average.

Even when they are at work, obese employees are generally not as productive, which costs companies even more.

"The very obese lose one month of productive work per year, costing employers an average of $3,792 per very obese male worker and $3,037 per female. Total annual cost […] due to obesity: $30 billion," said Reuters.

The bottom line is this – without a fitness and food preparation renaissance, this nation will eat itself into the economic abyss, as more and more obese Americans drain the remaining, and dwindling, healthcare resources from the rest of us.

Individuals who continually consume aspartame will have elevated phenylalanine.

Aspartic acid: an excitotoxin that literally over excites neurons and destroys cells. Methanol is also a neurotoxin and its absorption is also increased when aspartame is heated above 86 degrees Fahrenheit. This heating breaks methanol into formaldehyde which damages the nervous system and is highly carcinogenic.

Acefultame Potassium: This artificial sweetener is often times used in combination with other artificial sweeteners such as sucralose and/or aspartame to mask any form of after taste. This sweetener has been shown to stimulate insulin secretions even though it does not increase blood sugar. Elevated insulin increases inflammation and hampers immunity. Since Acefultame does not increase blood sugar this insulin response can stimulate reactive hypoglycemia. It has been linked to leukemia, breast cancer, thymus cancer and chronic respiratory diseases.

Sucralose: This artificial sweetener is marketed as if it came
from natural sugar. However, it is highly processed with three chlorine
atoms that damage the microflora within the human gut. The biochemist
Dr. James Bown says "sucralose is simply chlorinated sugar." Sucralose
has been shown to damage the thymus gland and inflame the liver and
kidneys. Chlorine is a natural anti-septic that harms the human gut and
destroys microflora leading to candida formation, irritable bowel
syndrome, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, obesity and cachexia.

Sodium Benzoate: This is a type of water soluble preservative salt that
is created by adding sodium hydroxide and benzoic acid. It is found in
many soft drinks, energy drinks and other processed foods and drinks.
Sodium Benzoate consumption has been strongly linked with
neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and inflammatory disorders
such as asthma. The combination of sodium benzoate and ascorbic acid
(vitamin C) which is quite common in soft drinks and popular energy
drinks creates the highly carcinogenic substance benzene. Benzene is
linked with many serious cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma.

Monosodium glutamate: This extremely dangerous flavor enhancer and preservative is used in many canned and packaged foods. The Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine has stated that it promotes the growth of cancer cells and is highly neurotoxic in the body. Other studies have linked it to liver damage, chronic inflammation, chronic pain and weight loss resistance. It is often included under deceptive names such as autolyzed yeast extract, natural flavorings, soy protein, whey protein isolate, etc.

Hass avocados have been found to be the most densely concentrated variety of the avocado fruit. They contain the highest content of lutein and zeaxanthin and other fat-soluble nutrients. Both types of avocados are terrific for the digestive system as they contain a good variety of both soluble and insoluble fibers.

Avocados are one of the best anti-aging foods that prevent wrinkles and skin aging. Dangerous Glass Fibers In Cigarettes Worsen Lung Damage For Smokers

According to the PA, the tiny shards penetrate the "lipid bilayer, then embed in the lung tissue, causing the tissue to harden and eventually lose its ability to absorb oxygen." This damage fuels the development of the same type of lung cancer (mesothelioma) associated with asbestos poisoning. He also explained how smoking destroys the cilia (tiny hairs) that help push excretions/mucus out, and how when smokers sleep, their breathing patterns relax and the "tar deposits creep in on damaged air sacs called blebs, eventually rupturing and collapsing them." This is why when smokers awake in the morning they can experience unproductive coughing fits and/or bronchial spasms.

Why Fiberglass?
The cigarette filter (butt) acts as a buffer from the extreme heat of the cigarette's burning chemicals, which can exceed 1700 degrees Fahrenheit during inhale. Fibrous glass has the heat-resistant qualities of asbestos, which makes it an efficient material for insulation; however, if you've ever been in an attic and got insulation on your skin, you already know how irritating the glass fibers can be, so now imagine what it's doing to the inside of a smoker's lungs.

Up to 12,000 microscopic glass fibers are tightly bound together, which explains why filters take between 10 to 15 years to disintegrate. If the filter were simply cotton rolled tightly in paper, a few rainstorms would break it up and wash it away within weeks. Use Herbs To Kill Bacteria Causing Urinary Tract Infections

Grapeseed extract may also be an effective treatment for UTI and other infections. The supplement promotes activity to fight bacteria that are causes of urinary tract infections.

Grapeseed extract also has antifungal and antiviral properties to treat infections caused by fungi or viruses. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends taking 100 milligram capsules or five to 10 drops of liquid grapeseed extract three times a day for treating infections.

Ineffectiveness of antibiotics
Up to 40 percent of UTIs recur in women within six months and up to 50 percent within one year using traditional treatments, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Infections are usually caused by the same bacteria. Antibiotics only suppress the bacteria temporarily, allowing for another infection to strike again soon.

Continuing to take herbs, such as cranberry and horseradish, may prevent another infection by killing new bacteria that cause UTIs. Goldenseal can stop bacteria from adhering to the bladder walls and reduce the likelihood of an infection.

One Baby Born Every Hour Addicted To Opiate Drugs

Less than a month old, Savannah Dannelley scrunches her tiny face into a scowl as a nurse gently squirts a dose of methadone into her mouth. The infant is going through drug withdrawal and is being treated with the same narcotic prescribed for her mother to fight addiction to powerful prescription painkillers.

Disturbing new research says the number of U.S. babies born with signs of opiate drug withdrawal has tripled in a decade because of a surge in pregnant women’s use of legal and illegal narcotics, including Vicodin, OxyContin and heroin, researchers say. It is the first national study of the problem.

The number of newborns with withdrawal symptoms increased from a little more than 1 per 1,000 babies sent home from the hospital in 2000 to more than 3 per 1,000 in 2009, the study found. More than 13,000 U.S. infants were affected in 2009, the researchers estimated.

The newborns include babies like Savannah, whose mother stopped abusing painkillers and switched to prescription methadone early in pregnancy, and those whose mothers are still abusing legal or illegal drugs.

Weaning infants from these drugs can take weeks or months and often requires a lengthy stay in intensive care units. Hospital charges for treating these newborns soared from $190 million to $720 million between 2000 and 2009, the study found.

The study was released online Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Savannah is hooked up to heart and oxygen monitors in an Oak Lawn, Ill., newborn intensive care unit. In a pink crib, she sleeps fitfully, sometimes cries all night, and has had diarrhea and trouble feeding — typical signs of withdrawal. Some affected babies also have breathing problems, low birth weights and seizures.

It nearly breaks her young mother’s heart.

“It’s really hard, every day, emotionally and physically,” said Aileen Dannelley, 25. “It’s really hard when your daughter is born addicted.”

Doctors say newborns aren’t really addicted — which connotes drug-seeking behavior that babies aren’t capable of — but their bodies are dependent on methadone or other opiates because of their mothers’ use during pregnancy. Small methadone doses to wean them off these drugs is safer than cutting them off altogether, which can cause dangerous seizures and even death, said Dr. Mark Brown, chief of pediatrics at Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Newborn drug withdrawal is rampant in Maine, Florida, West Virginia, parts of the Midwest and other sections of the country.

Dr. Stephen Patrick, the lead author of the study and a newborn specialist at the University of Michigan health system in Ann Arbor, called the problem a “public health epidemic” that demands attention from policymakers, as well as from researchers to clarify what long-term problems these infants may face.

University of Maine scientist Marie Hayes said her research suggests some affected infants suffer developmental delays in early childhood, but whether those problems persist is uncertain.

It’s the 21st century version of what was known as the “crack baby” epidemic of the 1980s. Some experts say that epidemic was overblown and that infants born to mothers using crack cocaine face no serious long-term health problems.

Some think the current problem is being overblown, too.

Carl Hart, an assistant psychiatry professor at Columbia University and a substance abuse researcher at the New York Psychiatric Institute, noted that only a tiny portion of the estimated 4 million U.S. infants born each year are affected.

Hart also said the study probably includes women who weren’t abusing drugs during pregnancy, but were taking prescribed painkillers for legitimate reasons. He said he worries that the study will unfairly stigmatize pregnant women who are “doing the right thing” by taking methadone to fight their addiction.
