Use Natural and Alternative Help for Fibromyalgia

by: Tony Isaacs

(NaturalNews) Fibromyalgia is a misunderstood and frequently misdiagnosed condition. It is characterized by widespread chronic pain involving multiple "tender points" in the upper neck, back, shoulders, and hips. Treatments, such as painkillers, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, and the injections of anesthetics are rarely effective. However, many may find relief from nature and alternatives as opposed to mainstream drugs and treatments.

A natural alternative which may heal fibromyalgia is to take plenty of colloidal silver (start off with 2-4 ounces per day and maintain at least an ounce a day until you achieve satisfactory results) and plenty of proteolytic/digestive enzymes to dissolve the fibrin (take up to 5 or more capsules two to three times daily on an empty stomach).

Here are some additional options:

Curcumin, magnesium, blackseed oil (Nigella sativa) and herbal oleander extract are all powerful immune modulators which may help. Magnesium deficiency has been associated with Fibromyalgia and it is estimated that as many as 80 to 95% of us are deficient in magnesium.

Consume apples and/or apple juice. They contain "malic acid", a substance that appears to ease pain and inflammation. Consume at least 2 apples, or 2 8-ounce glasses of juice daily.

Other good dietary practices that may help are:

* Eat plenty of essential fatty acids and omega 3's.
* Cut back on consumption of whole grain foods.
* Avoid sugar, artificial sweeteners and foods containing bleached flour.
* Eat yogurt which contains active yeast cultures.

Try acupuncture. The National Institutes of Health has deemed acupuncture to be an acceptable alternative, or part of a comprehensive treatment program, for several types of pain. Acupuncture is a 2,500 year-old practice, and the Chinese believe it works by affecting the energy pathways called "meridians" that run through the body. The "meridians" are thought to carry "qi" (pronounced chee), an energy force that must be in precise balance for good health. Poor health habits, such as getting too little sleep, eating the wrong foods, etc. cause qi to become unbalanced. Acupuncture rebalances qi by stimulating specific points along these meridians with extremely fine needles.

Fibromyalgia has also been associated with heavy metal contamination. Parsley, chlorella and cilantro are all good for removing heavy metals.

Consider niacin and niacinamide. Niacinamide slows down phase 1 of the body's natural detoxification process while niacin speeds up phase 2. Niacin is also known as inositol hexanicotinate, vitamin B3 and nicotinic acid. The body's natural liver detoxification process involves two steps: Phase 1 and Phase 2. In Phase 1, toxins are reduced to smaller fragments. These fragments then progress to Phase 2, where they are bound to glutathione, glycine, sulfate and other molecules. In the process, new non-toxic molecules are created that are eliminated via the bile duct, urine or stool. In effect, Phase 1 either directly neutralizes a toxin or modifies it to form intermediates which are then neutralized by one or more of the several Phase 2 enzyme systems.

One or both detoxification phases can be overloaded and/or inefficient. A particularly damaging combination for someone who is ill is an excessive overload of toxins coming into Phase 1 and an inefficient Phase 2. Such a combination is believed in many instances to be the cause of marked environmental sensitivities and drug intolerances and interactions that characterize many fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue sufferers.

Do not give up on exercise. People with fibromyalgia often stop exercising because it is painful. However, inactivity weakens muscles and makes them more sensitive to pain. Low impact aerobics, conditioning exercises, such as swimming, stationary bicycling or stretching, are often helpful for people with fibromyalgia.

Boost Low White Blood Cell Count and Immune Function Naturally

by: Tony Isaacs

(NaturalNews) Low white blood cell counts are indicative of a suppressed immune system and can have many causes. Emotional state and stress, an unhealthy diet and lifestyle, and nutritional intake can all cause lower immune system response and low white blood cell counts. Low immunity can also be caused by a number of health conditions, by surgical or medical treatments and by the natural aging process. Whatever the cause, low immunity and low white blood cell counts prevent the body from being able to have an optimum response to infections and illness. Here are some things which can help prevent low immunity and keep white blood cell counts high:

– Avoid sugar and keep sweet stuff to a minimum. Sugar prevents white blood cells from being their strongest
– Eliminate unhealthy fats. Polyunsaturated fats in vegetable oils such as corn, safflower, and sunflower oil are deterrents to a healthy immune system.
– If you are overweight, lose a few pounds. Being overweight is very detrimental to your immune system and studies have shown that overweight people are less able to fight off infection.
– Drink plenty of water to boost the immune system as well as flush out toxins
– Exercise is a proven immune system booster. Exercise is best in moderation, however, since too much exercise may wear the body down and create immune system problems.
– Avoid stress and try to relax. Stress is rightly called the silent killer and too much stress invariably leads to a lowered immune system.

Many food items help boost immune function and white blood cell counts. For example:

Carrots and other red, yellow, orange, and dark-green leafy vegetables contain beta carotene which helps protect the immune system, especially the thymus gland. Beta carotene and other carotenes also strengthen white blood cell production, and foods rich in beta-carotene help the body better fight off infection.

Yogurt can be very beneficial for the immune system. It helps the body produce antibodies and strengthens white blood cells.

A cup of kale will give you your daily requirement of vitamin A. This is an antioxidant that helps your body fight cancer cells and is essential in the formation of white blood cells. Vitamin A also increases the ability of antibodies to respond to invaders.

People who eat more garlic have more natural killer white blood cells.

Other helpful foods include chicken, kale, almonds, guava, crab, dark grapes and navy beans.

Supplements can play a big role in boosting immune function and white blood cell counts. Some examples:

– Oleander extract in herbal supplement form. One herbal oleander based supplement was 100% effective in a clinical trial of raising white blood cell counts in HIV/AIDS patients with extremely compromised immune systems.

– Astragalus root helps stimulate white blood cells and protects against invading organisms. It also enhances production of the important natural compound interferon to fight against viruses.

– Zinc is necessary for white blood cell function and it acts as a catalyst in the immune system's killer response to foreign bodies.

– Vitamin C is an immune enhancer that helps white blood cells perform at their peak and quickens the immune system response.

– The trace mineral selenium is vital to the development and movement of white blood cells.

– Both Siberian ginseng (eleuthero) and Asian ginseng provide support for the immune system.

– Echinacea helps stimulate the immune system in a variety of ways, including increased white blood cell production.

– Green Tea also stimulates production of white blood cells.

Some other potent immune boosters are pau d arco, suma, medicinal mushrooms, beta glucans and aloe vera.

Beat and Treat ADD and ADHD without Drugs

by: Tony Isaacs

(NaturalNews) ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Hyperactivity Deficit Disorder) are similar conditions. ADD is now often known as ADD/WO, meaning "attention deficit without hyperactivity"). Fortunately, such conditions may be prevented or improved with diet and supplementation instead of risky mainstream drugs.

Though ADD and ADHD may in part be syndromes created to describe age-old problems and publicized in order to sell drugs, it is also likely that modern living conditions are resulting in an increase in childhood and adult behavior and attention problems.

The suspected culprits for increased behavior and attention problems are multiple: excessive sugar and high fructose corn syrup, lack of vital nutrients, increased environmental toxins, increased vaccinations, food additives such as MSG, GMO crops, and exposure to microwaves and other electro magnetic radiation. In addition, lack of proper nurturing and parenting likely plays a big role as well.

One must remember that the brain is a vital organ just like the heart, lungs, liver, etc., and it needs optimum nutrition to function properly. Sadly, today's SAD diet of fast foods, snacks & junk foods, microwavable meals and processed foods on the grocers' shelves has left most of our kids, and us, woefully deficient in a great many nutrients the body was designed to utilize. Sometimes the consequences manifest themselves early on, and other times it is down the road a ways. But you can bet that there will be consequences if not addressed and corrected.

The first thing to do is to cut one's consumption of sugar to a minimum. Excessive refined sugar has been linked heavily to ADD, ADHD, bipolar, depression and other mental disorders. Also avoid alcohol, caffeine, and refined foods.

Eat good sources of lean protein, such as cold water fish, including salmon, herring, and mackerel and free range organic chicken and turkey. Include plentiful Omega 3s.

Though low-carb and no-carb foods and diets have been popular in recent years, carbohydrates are an essential energy source for the body and mind. The key is to insure that you are receiving the right kinds of carbohydrates. Unhealthy carbohydrates result in too much sugar which causes the problems we are trying to prevent. Healthy carbohydrates can be found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Examples are: apples, oranges, peaches, grapefruit, carrots, Brussels sprouts, beans, and whole wheat bread.

Supplement with magnesium (a 1-2 ratio with calcium) if you are unsure that you are getting enough of this vital mineral. Various studies have indicated that anywhere from 80 to 95% of us are deficient in magnesium and symptoms include mental disorders, light or restless sleep, daytime sleepiness, and inability to concentrate.

Some other suggested supplements:

* GABA (Gamma-amino-butyric acid) – calms the body
* Pycnogenol and/or Grapeseed Extract – powerful antioxidants offering cellular protection for the body and brain
* Quercetin – prevents allergies from aggravating symptoms
* SAMe (S-Adenosylmethionine) – aids in relieving stress and pain (Note: do not use in the event of manic-depressive disorder or if on prescription antidepressants)
* Gingko – enhances blood supply to the brain and improves nerve cell function
* Colloidal gold – can improve mood and focus
* Valerian root extract – has been used for ADD with dramatic results and no side effects

Lastly, consider a good all around whole food vitamin, mineral and other essential nutrient product. Some of the many benefits of getting regular optimum amounts of essential vitamins, minerals and other nutrients include:

* Neuro-cognitive brain function
* Focus and concentration
* Mood regulation
* Short and long term memory
* Sleep and wake cycle
* Sugar control
* Brain growth and development

Use Nature and Colloidal Silver to Knock Out the Common Cold

by: Tony Isaacs

(NaturalNews) Mainstream medicine tells us that there is little we can do for the common cold other than treat the symptoms and let the cold run its course. To some extent, a cold does have to run its course, but what many do not know is that nature offers remedies that can greatly speed recovery from a common cold as well as treat symptoms – and do so more effectively and more safely than mainstream medicines.

An almost sure fire way to help lessen symptoms and speed recovery of a cold is to take a combination of colloidal silver and some of nature's best cold fighters: echinacea, vitamin C, zinc, olive leaf extract and garlic.

Take plentiful amounts of vitamin C (up to 1,000 mg of vitamin C an hour for the first 6 hours and then up to 1000 mg three times daily thereafter) and one to three cloves of freshly minced garlic that has been allowed to sit for 15 minutes, along with the amounts specified on the product labels for olive leaf extract and zinc. Take plenty of echinacea – at least three to four times the amount on the label. It is best to have the echinacea in extract form so you can gargle with it too, as echinacea has antiseptic qualities and soothing qualities that can help with the sore throat when gargled and swallowed.

If there is any congestion or cough, nebulize with colloidal silver and lobelia (five parts colloidal silver to one part lobelia) several times daily.

In addition, get plenty of bed rest and drink plenty of liquids. Chicken noodle soup is a tried and true cold reliever and recent studies have attested to its effectiveness against the common cold. The above combo will usually help you beat a cold in only a few days – the sooner you get started the quicker the cold will be gone (which is true of any effective cold remedy).

Another remedy that is effective against the common cold:

Mix together the following ingredients:

* 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
* 1/4 teaspoon powdered ginger
* 1/4 teaspoon cloves
* One tablespoon apple cider vinegar
* One tablespoon honey (or to taste)
* Two tablespoons water

Store the mixture in a small bottle and take three teaspoons whenever needed. Note: Use organic raw honey if at all possible. Manuka honey is the best of all.

Lastly, here is a Mexican-Apache cold cure as reported by the great granddaughter of Geronimo:

"My father, Crisosto Pena, a Mexican Apache, believed that chili could cure anything. He said that it was packed full of vitamins and therefore a cure-all, especially for colds.

"One day he returned from work and found his wife and five children in bed with the flu. He felt so bad for them that he took out the bag of hot chili pods and soaked them in hot water for 15 minutes. Then he put them into a grinder and ground them with the water they were soaked in. He gave each one of his family members a spoonful with a piece of tortilla. About an hour later the family was moving about. The children were out playing around, and his wife was cooking dinner.

"From that day on, I too believe that chili is a cure-all, especially for colds. As a preventive medicine, you can mix the chili with garlic and onions. It not only tastes good, but also keeps colds away."

Told by I.M. Crisosto Pena, daughter of Crisosto Pena, and great great granddaughter of Geronimo.

Naturally Reduce Your Chances of Getting Cancer, Part I

by: Tony Isaacs

(NaturalNews) Mainstream health experts have estimated that up to 40% of all cancer could be prevented with more immunizations against diseases that increase cancer risks and with healthy changes in diet and lifestyle. Many natural health experts believe that the figure could be closer to 90% and could be achieved without the widespread immunizations called for by mainstream medicine – immunizations are themselves risk factors for cancer.

Toxins and illness, especially viral illnesses, often result in prolonged inflammation that leads to a cellular defensive response that ends up resulting in cancer. Exposure to various forms of radiation can also lead to cancer. Avoiding those causes of cancer and taking measures to prevent them from causing cancer are the keys to preventing cancer. The immune system is our natural first line against cancer and illness, including illness that leads to cancer. In order for any illness to gain a foothold, it must first defeat the immune system. Consequently, it would appear obvious that building and maintaining a healthy and robust immune system would be an essential first step in avoiding cancer. Avoiding the toxins in our air, water and food supply is a second essential for avoiding cancer and a third one is avoiding radiation.

In order to build a healthy immune system and avoid cancer causes, one should first build a healthy foundation. Keys to building a healthy foundation are replacing bad health habits such as smoking and a sedentary lifestyle with good ones and making sure that one gets all the nutrition needed for optimum health. For many of us, that means changing our diet from the unhealthy SAD diet of most Americans to one that exchanges the junk food and harmful processed food to a diet that includes mostly raw and mostly organic vegetables and fruits, as well as healthy seeds. The healthiest includes plenty of omega-3s, adequate iodine and other essentials, a minimum of processed and GMO foods, and modest portions of meat. Meat should either be cold water fish or small portions of organic free range meats that have not been subjected to feed lot practices; feedlot meats are likely to contain antibiotics and growth hormones that may promote cancer. Processed meats are the unhealthiest of all.

It is virtually impossible to get even the minimum RDA of all essential nutrients from diet alone, much less the optimum daily amounts needed for the best health. Sadly, most of us are deficient in multiple nutrients thanks not only to our diets but also to our over-farmed soils, cold storage produce and foods on our grocers' shelves that have had much of the nutrition processed out. Therefore, supplementation with specific nutrients, a good whole foods derived nutrient combination, and/or a good superfoods powder may be necessary to help achieve optimum health and immune systems.

Other key considerations for building a healthy foundation include living an active lifestyle, getting plenty of life giving sunshine and elimination of all pesticides, herbicides, and other common household chemicals not found in nature.

The above suggestions will go a long way towards avoiding cancer. Others, such as those who have a family history of cancer and those who have had a viral illness or other disease associated with higher cancer risk, may want to go even farther.

In the concluding part of this series, we will take a look at extra measures people can take to give them the maximum protection against cancer and at why immunizations may not be the answer we've been told to believe..

Ten Easy and Natural Ways to Keep Your Brain in Top Shape

by: Tony Isaacs

(NaturalNews) Keeping your brain sharp and preventing mental decline involves more than just the brain itself. Healthy practices in many areas of life will help you keep your brain, as well as your body, in top shape. Here are 10 easy and natural ways to help keep your brain in top shape now and prevent problems later:

1. Lead an active lifestyle and exercise regularly. Regular exercise such as brisk walking, swimming, aerobics and yoga in mid-life helps forestall and prevent memory problems that often come with aging. In later years, regular exercise and physical activity can actually improve the brain function of people with mild cognitive impairment. There is no need to overdo it – mild to moderate exercise is all it takes. The key is to do it regularly.

2. Exercise and challenge your mind. An active brain stays sharp and continues to produce new connections between nerve cells. Studies have shown the benefits of regularly solving crosswords and other brain teasers. Other things to consider are reading, playing games such as chess, and learning a new hobby. Instead of watching mind numbing TV shows watch programs that provide new and thought provoking information such as shows about history and science.

3. Eat a healthy diet. A diet that is low in saturated fats, sugar, bleached white flour and junk foods and which has an abundance of colorful fruits and veggies will keep your brain sharp as well as keeping your body trim and protecting you against diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

4. Avoid and manage stress. We have all heard that stress is the silent killer and it is true. Stress also damages your brain by releasing damaging hormones. Some of the best ways to manage stress include simplifying your life, avoiding stressful situations, stopping to smell the roses from time to time, and using techniques such as yoga, meditation, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and/or MTT (Meridian Tapping Technique).

5. Get adequate sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. Restful sleep enables the body and brain to heal and recharge so that you are healthier and are able to think more clearly. Sleep also helps you have a better long-term memory.

6. Be sure to include plenty of antioxidants in your diet. Numerous studies have shown that a diet rich in antioxidants helps prevent and slow age-related declines in memory and learning. Among the very best sources of antioxidants are blueberries, dark grapes and pomegranates.

7. Incorporate plenty of essential omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. Omega-3s help protect the brain against age-related decline and maintain proper brain function throughout life. Some of the best omega-3 sources include fatty cold water fish such as tuna, sardines, mackerel, and herring.

8. Have an active social life. Talking and interacting with others keeps your brain active and sharpens thinking. According to a leading psychologist, spending only 10 minutes talking to another person can be as effective as mental exercises such as working crossword puzzles.

9. Don`t smoke. According to the Mayo Clinic, smokers have twice the risk of developing Alzheimer`s. If you do smoke, stop! Even people who have smoked for years can reduce their risk of memory problems by quitting.

10. Drink in moderation. While low to moderate amounts of alcohol, especially red wine, have been shown to protect against heart disease and cancer, heavy drinking (more than 14 drinks each week) actually shrinks brains.

Mainstream Drugs are Neither Safe nor Effective, Part II

by: Tony Isaacs

(NaturalNews) Mainstream medicine assures us that their drugs are more effective than nature and that they have been scientifically proven to be both effective and safe. What mainstream medicine does not tell us is how they have rigged studies, withheld evidence of harm and paid doctors to prescribe their drugs.

The drug industry has been riddled with scandal again and again – including faked studies, rigged studies, hidden evidence of dangers, ghostwritten articles, fake medical journals, sex scandals, and much more. Merck, Vioxx. Pfizer, Avantis, GlaxoKilineSmith, Baxter Labs, the list goes on and on and on and leaves virtually no major pharmaceutical company untouched:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2002/f…

http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/extr…

All one has to do to get an idea of how riddled with scandal the drug industry has been is to do a simple internet search for "drug company scandals". Absolutely shameful!

The latest example:

http://www.healthiertalk.com/pfizer…

Another problem with mainstream drugs is the influence peddling of the pharmaceutical companies to get doctors to prescribe their medicines. Many doctors receive incentives for prescribing drugs – such as honorariums, free lunches and other gifts, and even free massages and cruise trips, to name a few. There have been a number of scandals concerning drug companies essentially bribing doctors to prescribe their drugs, and there have been many cries for reform to insure that drugs are prescribed according to the patient's best interests and not the financial interests of doctors and drug companies.

Besides all the incentives, some doctors make profits directly from the drugs they prescribe, often with unhealthy consequences for their patients. In an article that appeared in the New York Times in May 2007 it was revealed that two of the world's largest drug companies are paying hundreds of millions of dollars to doctors every year in return for giving their patients anemia medicines, which regulators now say may be unsafe at commonly used doses.

The same article noted that:

"Federal laws bar drug companies from paying doctors to prescribe medicines that are given in pill form and purchased by patients from pharmacies. But companies can rebate part of the price that doctors pay for drugs, which they dispense in their offices as part of treatment. Doctors receive the rebates after they buy the drugs from the companies. But they also receive reimbursement from Medicare or private insurers for the drugs, often at a markup over the doctors purchase price."

See: http://news.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/…

No wonder a Harris Poll found that only 13% of Americans believe that pharmaceutical companies are "generally honest and trustworthy".

Unwitting Public Consume More GMO Foods while Evidence of Harm Continues to Mount

by: Tony Isaacs

(NaturalNews) Most Americans do not want genetically modified foods and consider them dangerous. Because the U.S. does not require manufacturers to disclose genetically modified (GM or GMO) ingredients on the product labels, the public is largely unaware of when they are purchasing GM foods. Such foods are now found in up to 70 percent of all grocery store products. While an unwitting public consumes more and more GM foods, evidence of their dangers continues to mount.

Genetically modified foods are created when genes from another species are created in a lab and inserted into a food's DNA. The foods which have the highest prevalence of genetic modifications include some of our biggest crops: corn, soybeans, canola, tomatoes, lettuce, and potatoes. Corn oil and high fructose corn syrup are widely used in food items. Virtually every salad dressing and butter substitute finds that they contain one or more of corn oil, canola oil or soybean oil.

The European Union, Japan, China, Korea, Australia, and New Zealand require labeling of foods containing GMO content. Despite a CBS News showing a majority of Americans want labeling, no such laws exist. A CBS poll also found that 53 percent of Americans wouldn't buy food they knew had been genetically modified.

Experts and consumers are becoming increasingly concerned about GMO foods as evidence of their dangers continues to mount. In a study published in the International Journal of Biological Sciences rats fed genetically modified corn were compared to their parents who had been fed non-GM corn. The results showed a clear difference between the two groups. The rats fed GM food had signs of liver and kidney problems as well as effects on their hearts, adrenal glands, and spleens.

A Russian study found that over 55 percent of the newborn rats from females fed genetically engineered soy flour before, during, and after pregnancy, died within three weeks and 36 percent were underweight. By comparison, only 9 percent of the offspring of rats fed non-GM soy died and less than 7 percent were underweight.

The global leader in the push for GMO foods is Monsanto. A new study which used the same data Monsanto used to gain approval of GMO corn linked organ damage to three strains of the Monsanto GM corn. The study was conducted by the Committee of Research and Information on Genetic Engineering (CRIIGEN) and the Universities of Caen and Rouen in France. The study, completed in December 2009, appears in the International Journal of Biological Sciences (IJBS).

Ninety-nine percent of GMO crops either tolerate or produce insecticide – which might explain why we see bee colony collapse disorder and massive butterfly deaths. If GMOs destroy our pollinators, they could be more disastrous than the threat they pose to humans and other mammals. In addition to possible extinctions and eco-system harm, GMO opponents fear they could trigger the emergence of antibiotic resistant diseases due to viruses and bacteria used to modify some GM foods. They also fear such foods could raise the risk of developing cancer, lead to chronic illnesses such as fibromyalgia and trigger food allergies.

To avoid GM foods:

– Read the produce stickers on fruits and vegetables. Five-digit numbers beginning with an eight mean it is a GM food. Five-digit numbers beginning with a nine indicate organic foods. Conventionally produced foods have numbers containing four digits.
– Select products that are labeled GM-free.
– Buy foods labeled "100 percent organic."
– Get your produce from small, local farmers (most GM foods come from large commercial farms).
– Avoid processed foods, especially those containing corn, soy and canola.

Mainstream Drugs Are Neither Safe Nor Effective, Part I

by: Tony Isaacs

(NaturalNews) For generations we have been told by mainstream medicine that their drugs are safer and more effective than natural alternatives such as those man has used for healing for thousands of years. Similarly, we have been told that herbs and other natural alternatives are unproven, usually of little or no value and often may be dangerous. History tells us an entirely different story.

Proponents of mainstream drugs and critics of natural healing usually cite the lack of scientific studies proving the effectiveness or safety of herbs and natural alternatives. Likewise, mainstream drug advocates point to the wealth of studies which prove the effectiveness and safety of patented mainstream drugs. However, relatively few comprehensive studies have been conducted on herbs other than to find a compound that can be synthesized or uniquely isolated so it can be patented and profited from by the drug companies. Drug companies are by far the largest source of funding for medical studies and the cost of such studies is a huge barrier for natural alternatives. The FDA trial process costs hundreds of millions of dollars, and no one can afford to get a natural item approved that they cannot control. Whole herbs and extracts of herbs that contain multiple compounds found in nature cannot be patented.

Despite the complicated, expensive and time consuming process of getting FDA approval, many point to all the harmful drugs that have been approved as an indication that the system is deeply flawed and rigged in favor of those who have the money. It has been shown that studies tend to return positive results for the funders up to eight times more often than independent studies on the same item.

The FDA approval process did not prevent us from having rigged studies on Vioxx. Nor did it prevent rigged studies for decades on the safety – and even claimed health benefits – of smoking cigarettes. Those are just two examples in a very long list of drugs and other items mainstream science told us were safe but weren`t. For example: thalidomide, heroin, opium, cocaine, Avandia, Fosamax, Prozac, Paxil, Aleve, Bextra, Aspartame . . the list goes on and on.

Another problem with mainstream medical studies is the apparent lack of quality standards employed by pharmaceutical companies in selecting doctors who oversee drug testing. A New York Times investigation in 2007 found that in Minnesota alone at least 103 doctors who had been disciplined or criticized by the state medical board received a total of $1.7 million from drug makers between 1997 to 2005. The median payment over that period was $1,250; the largest was $479,000.

One such doctor was Dr. Faruk Abuzzahab, whom the Minnesota Medical board accused of a "reckless, if not willful, disregard" for the welfare of 46 patients, 5 of whom died in his care or shortly afterward. The board suspended his license for seven months and restricted it for two years after that. One of Dr. Abuzzahab`s patients was David Olson, whom the psychiatrist tried repeatedly to recruit for clinical trials. Drug makers paid Dr. Abuzzahab thousands of dollars for every patient he recruited. In July 1997, when Mr. Olson again refused to be a test subject, Dr. Abuzzahab discharged him from the hospital even though he was suicidal, records show. Mr. Olson committed suicide two weeks later.

To be continued . . .

Brace Yourself for the “Golden Era” of Vaccines

by Tony Isaacs

Brace yourself for a new onslaught of vaccines as drug makers around the world are jumping on the vaccine profits bandwagon that is being hailed as the "golden era of vaccines". According to market research firm Kalorama Information, vaccine sales should double, from $19 billion last year to $39 billion in 2013 – five times the $8 billion in vaccine sales in 2004.

Alzheimer's disease, AIDS, pandemic flu, genital herpes, malaria, tuberculosis, urinary tract infections, grass allergies, traveler's diarrhea – you name it, the pharmaceutical industry is working on a vaccine to supposedly prevent it.  The lure of big profits and government support has been drawing in new companies, from new biotechs to Johnson & Johnson, helped along by traditional vaccination supporters such as the World Health Organization, the CDC, global charities and the mass media.

With only one or two makers of most vaccine types, price competition is rare in wealthy countries and vaccines are commanding ever higher prices.  The three shot Gardasil series costs around $375.  Plus, vaccine makers rarely face generic competition.

As Emilio Emini, Pfizer Inc,'s head of vaccine research, enthusiastically stated, "Even if a small portion of everything that's going on now is successful in the next 10 years, you put that together with the last 10 years (and) it's going to be characterized as a golden era."

Five years ago, the vaccine market was relatively stagnant.  Then came the vaccine the experts call the "game changer" – Wyeth's Prevnar, aimed at ear infections, pneumonia and blood infections. Prevnar became the first vaccine to exceed $1 billion in annual sales.  Prevnar had sales of $2.8 billion in 2008, followed by Gardasil, with $2.3 billion.

Last year we had the great Swine Flu Scare, which boosted vaccine makers' profits by even more billions. Britain's GlaxoSmithKline estimated a boost in vaccine sales by as much as $2 Billion dollars from its Swine Flu vaccine alone.  Sanofi-Aventis forecast that H1N1 vaccines would add about $500 million to its sales last quarter and indicated sales would continue "at a similar rate" into the first quarter of 2010. Overall, Sanofi estimates a 40% increase in vaccine sales in 2010.

GlaxoSmithKline, gunning to unseat Merck as the world's top vaccine opened a state-of-the-art vaccine packaging plant in Marietta, PA last spring to help it expand in the U.S. market. Glaxo, which sold only one vaccine in the U.S. 13 years ago, now sells 12 here and 30 worldwide. It has 20 more in human testing.

Johnson & Johnson, which had previously avoided vaccines, is planning on building a full vaccine portfolio, starting with universal flu and Alzheimer's vaccines. Pfizer Inc,'s $68 billion acquisition of Wyeth in October was due in large part to getting Wyeth's vaccine expertise.

Flu shot use has jumped from 20 million doses in 1990 to 113 million last year.  That parallels the huge increase in childhood vaccinations.  In 1984 there were 10 mandatory vaccinations for children from birth to age 6.  By 2007 the number had grown to 36.

See:  http://www.generationrescue.org/pdf/cdc_comparison.pdf

Meanwhile, there have been no long term studies on vaccination safety for even single vaccines, much less the effects of so many combined vaccines. Already, vaccinations have been linked to disorders of the blood, brain, skin, and nervous system – including encephalitis, paralysis, nerve inflammation, diseases of the lymph glands, skin disorders, allergies, arthritis, cancer and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

With the push for new vaccinations in store for us, we can only shudder at what the negative health effects might be and wonder if every sniffle that comes along may become the "next" swine flu.
