Water Retention and Water Weigh

• Water. Drink plenty of water (36-64 ounces per day depending on body size and weigh.)More often than not, water retention is due to a lack of water intake. When there is a lackof pure water fluids or too much coffee and/or soda pop, which can act as diuretics, the body goes into a water retention mode to conserve fluids.

• White Salt. If you are consuming too much salt, especially white bleached salt,it may be causing excess water retention.

• Apple cider vinegar. A natural diuretic which helps in the elimination of poisons from the body.

Use a ¼ to ½ ounce in an 8 ounce glass of water or juice. Do not drink without diluting.

Cataract Surgery

Q:
I had cataract surgery (10 days ago on the right eye, 3 days ago on the left). The doctor has me putting 3 different drops in my eyes 3 times a day. One is an anti-inflammatory, one an antibiotic, and one is a steroid(prednisolone acetate). I hate taking any and all of these ( I am a natural health person), and I am seriously reacting to the steroid. I have been using cs for years in a nose spray to treat allergies. Can I use it for this, too?

Filomena in Maine

A:
Hi Filomena,

…My apology for the delayed response.

I routinely use silver in my own eyes and my pet’s eyes for inflammation, pink-eye, and irritation from debris. Although, I’m not a surgeon to give you advice on discarding the meds he prescribed for you, I have no doubt that silver would enhance the healing process. Burns are some of the most difficult wounds to heal and silver in crèmes and bandaging material is even used by mainstream medicine to accelerate healing and reduce scarring.

You are appreciated in Utopia.

Use Nature and Colloidal Silver to Knock Out the Common Cold

by: Tony Isaacs

(NaturalNews) Mainstream medicine tells us that there is little we can do for the common cold other than treat the symptoms and let the cold run its course. To some extent, a cold does have to run its course, but what many do not know is that nature offers remedies that can greatly speed recovery from a common cold as well as treat symptoms – and do so more effectively and more safely than mainstream medicines.

An almost sure fire way to help lessen symptoms and speed recovery of a cold is to take a combination of colloidal silver and some of nature's best cold fighters: echinacea, vitamin C, zinc, olive leaf extract and garlic.

Take plentiful amounts of vitamin C (up to 1,000 mg of vitamin C an hour for the first 6 hours and then up to 1000 mg three times daily thereafter) and one to three cloves of freshly minced garlic that has been allowed to sit for 15 minutes, along with the amounts specified on the product labels for olive leaf extract and zinc. Take plenty of echinacea – at least three to four times the amount on the label. It is best to have the echinacea in extract form so you can gargle with it too, as echinacea has antiseptic qualities and soothing qualities that can help with the sore throat when gargled and swallowed.

If there is any congestion or cough, nebulize with colloidal silver and lobelia (five parts colloidal silver to one part lobelia) several times daily.

In addition, get plenty of bed rest and drink plenty of liquids. Chicken noodle soup is a tried and true cold reliever and recent studies have attested to its effectiveness against the common cold. The above combo will usually help you beat a cold in only a few days – the sooner you get started the quicker the cold will be gone (which is true of any effective cold remedy).

Another remedy that is effective against the common cold:

Mix together the following ingredients:

* 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
* 1/4 teaspoon powdered ginger
* 1/4 teaspoon cloves
* One tablespoon apple cider vinegar
* One tablespoon honey (or to taste)
* Two tablespoons water

Store the mixture in a small bottle and take three teaspoons whenever needed. Note: Use organic raw honey if at all possible. Manuka honey is the best of all.

Lastly, here is a Mexican-Apache cold cure as reported by the great granddaughter of Geronimo:

"My father, Crisosto Pena, a Mexican Apache, believed that chili could cure anything. He said that it was packed full of vitamins and therefore a cure-all, especially for colds.

"One day he returned from work and found his wife and five children in bed with the flu. He felt so bad for them that he took out the bag of hot chili pods and soaked them in hot water for 15 minutes. Then he put them into a grinder and ground them with the water they were soaked in. He gave each one of his family members a spoonful with a piece of tortilla. About an hour later the family was moving about. The children were out playing around, and his wife was cooking dinner.

"From that day on, I too believe that chili is a cure-all, especially for colds. As a preventive medicine, you can mix the chili with garlic and onions. It not only tastes good, but also keeps colds away."

Told by I.M. Crisosto Pena, daughter of Crisosto Pena, and great great granddaughter of Geronimo.

Increase Magnesium Levels for Optimum Brain Functioning

by: Paul Fassa

(NaturalNews) Magnesium is a vital mineral for our overall health, and now a Chinese study has discovered that higher magnesium levels dramatically improve brain health. Guosong Liu, Director of the Center for Learning and Memory at Tsinghua University in Beijing stated, "[E]levating brain magnesium content via increasing magnesium intake might be a useful new strategy to enhance cognitive abilities."

The Effect On The Brain

Byron Richards,CCN and author of Fight for Your Health, explains that the Chinese study showed magnesium's effect on the brain cell's synaptic plasticity: "… a key feature of nerve architecture that enables your brain to tolerate stress, recover from trauma, and make actual changes. Synaptic plasticity is based on having well-nourished and properly energized brain cells – compared to inflamed brain cells that have become damaged and 'stuck in their ways'."

Due to topsoil depletion from improper farming practices, most of the population is magnesium deficient. As we get older, less magnesium is present in our cells. Yet it takes around twice the amount of magnesium recommended for body health to enhance and preserve the brain's optimum cognitive and memory functions.

While consuming 400 mg of magnesium is considered adequate for most general health purposes, nutritionist Richards recommends up to 1000 mg for optimum brain health.

About You and Magnesium

Within the cells is where 80 percent of magnesium's activity as a catalyst and synthesizing agent occurs. That's why Dr. Otis Woodward, MD, a holistic physician who calls magnesium "the master mineral" recommends a red blood cell (RBC) test over a simple blood test to determine magnesium levels. "It can look good in your blood, but if it is not in your cells you won't get the benefits."

If RBC testing is not available or within your budget, kinesiology or muscle testing could also help determine your magnesium needs. So many symptoms of magnesium deficiency resemble so many others, fatigue, muscular tension, and irritability among others, that it's difficult to determine by symptoms alone. It's important to realize that long term magnesium deficiency is associated with many diseases, including cancer.

Magnesium is critically involved with over 300 cellular metabolic functions. Mark Sircus, OMD, in a Natural News article (source below) calls magnesium the "Lamp of Life", as it is the major constituent for producing chlorophyll in plant life. Without that, plants could not interact with the sun and survive.

Obviously, organic green vegetables should be heavily consumed for a substantial magnesium intake. It is claimed that organic vegetables have up to ten times more magnesium than non-organic. Super foods such as Chlorella that contain high amounts of chlorophyll will help overcome magnesium deficiencies. Fulvic (not folic) acid, black strap molasses, and unprocessed sea salt are high in magnesium too.

Commercial table salt and white processed sugar, as well as foods that contain white bleached flour should be avoided. These items actually leech magnesium out of your body. You may find it best to supplement with a magnesium powder, often mixed with calcium, in water with a splash of organic apple cider vinegar or a squeeze of lime or lemon to help absorb the magnesium. A calcium to magnesium ratio of 2:1 is good, but unnecessary if your calcium intake is already high.

It's also possible to supplement magnesium transdermally by soaking in salts high in magnesium or applying magnesium oils. Unless one has serious kidney problems, it takes a lot to overdue magnesium supplementation. But it's easy to notice. Like Vitamin C, too much magnesium manifests as diarrhea, a threshold that varies with each individual.

Naturally Reduce Your Chances of Getting Cancer, Part I

by: Tony Isaacs

(NaturalNews) Mainstream health experts have estimated that up to 40% of all cancer could be prevented with more immunizations against diseases that increase cancer risks and with healthy changes in diet and lifestyle. Many natural health experts believe that the figure could be closer to 90% and could be achieved without the widespread immunizations called for by mainstream medicine – immunizations are themselves risk factors for cancer.

Toxins and illness, especially viral illnesses, often result in prolonged inflammation that leads to a cellular defensive response that ends up resulting in cancer. Exposure to various forms of radiation can also lead to cancer. Avoiding those causes of cancer and taking measures to prevent them from causing cancer are the keys to preventing cancer. The immune system is our natural first line against cancer and illness, including illness that leads to cancer. In order for any illness to gain a foothold, it must first defeat the immune system. Consequently, it would appear obvious that building and maintaining a healthy and robust immune system would be an essential first step in avoiding cancer. Avoiding the toxins in our air, water and food supply is a second essential for avoiding cancer and a third one is avoiding radiation.

In order to build a healthy immune system and avoid cancer causes, one should first build a healthy foundation. Keys to building a healthy foundation are replacing bad health habits such as smoking and a sedentary lifestyle with good ones and making sure that one gets all the nutrition needed for optimum health. For many of us, that means changing our diet from the unhealthy SAD diet of most Americans to one that exchanges the junk food and harmful processed food to a diet that includes mostly raw and mostly organic vegetables and fruits, as well as healthy seeds. The healthiest includes plenty of omega-3s, adequate iodine and other essentials, a minimum of processed and GMO foods, and modest portions of meat. Meat should either be cold water fish or small portions of organic free range meats that have not been subjected to feed lot practices; feedlot meats are likely to contain antibiotics and growth hormones that may promote cancer. Processed meats are the unhealthiest of all.

It is virtually impossible to get even the minimum RDA of all essential nutrients from diet alone, much less the optimum daily amounts needed for the best health. Sadly, most of us are deficient in multiple nutrients thanks not only to our diets but also to our over-farmed soils, cold storage produce and foods on our grocers' shelves that have had much of the nutrition processed out. Therefore, supplementation with specific nutrients, a good whole foods derived nutrient combination, and/or a good superfoods powder may be necessary to help achieve optimum health and immune systems.

Other key considerations for building a healthy foundation include living an active lifestyle, getting plenty of life giving sunshine and elimination of all pesticides, herbicides, and other common household chemicals not found in nature.

The above suggestions will go a long way towards avoiding cancer. Others, such as those who have a family history of cancer and those who have had a viral illness or other disease associated with higher cancer risk, may want to go even farther.

In the concluding part of this series, we will take a look at extra measures people can take to give them the maximum protection against cancer and at why immunizations may not be the answer we've been told to believe..

Corruption of Physicians by Big Pharma Now “Limited” to $500 an Hour

by: Ethan A. Huff

(NaturalNews) Congressional investigation over the unethical relationships between doctors and drug companies has led to a change in policy at Partners HealthCare, a Boston based hospital system affiliated with Harvard Medical School, that prohibits its physicians who sit on the boards of various biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies from receiving company stock and unlimited fees for their presence. They are now limited to only $500 an hour, or $5,000 a day, for their services which include things like attending board meetings.

The fact that about 25 vice presidents, clinical department heads, and other top executives in the system will be affected by this new rule illustrates the degree to which the medical system has been influenced by pharmaceutical interests. Physicians from top medical centers, including academic ones, often join the ranks of drug companies and are paid top dollar to push various drugs and treatments. They are even paid with company stock.

This blatant conflict of interest is not isolated to Partners, as many different organizations and academic institutions have come under fire by state regulators, Congress, and even hospitals themselves for allowing this practice to occur. Nationally, there has been a heavy push to stop the drug industry's control over doctors whether it be through perks, incentives or comfortable board positions.

The new policy at Partners prohibits doctors from touring the nation as paid drug company spokesmen, a practice commonly utilized by drug companies to promote their products. Partners will not, however, ban its physicians from working for drug companies altogether. They will still be allowed to sit on their boards and receive compensation – it will merely be "reduced" to $500 per hour.

It is virtually impossible for a physician to be both a physician and an executive for a drug company. For the drug company, he will be responsible for helping it achieve financial success, while for the hospital, he will be responsible for objectively treating patients. A physician cannot objectively treat a patient while at the same time be paid to use a company's drugs to treat that patient.

According to Dr. Dennis Auseillo, chief scientific officer at Partners and cochairman of drug-giant Pfizer's science and technology committee, all drug companies have at least a couple physicians on their boards. After being named a director of Pfizer in 2006 himself, Auseillo has received over $700,000 in company stocks and compensation. He plans to continue working for Pfizer under the new rules.

Ten Easy and Natural Ways to Keep Your Brain in Top Shape

by: Tony Isaacs

(NaturalNews) Keeping your brain sharp and preventing mental decline involves more than just the brain itself. Healthy practices in many areas of life will help you keep your brain, as well as your body, in top shape. Here are 10 easy and natural ways to help keep your brain in top shape now and prevent problems later:

1. Lead an active lifestyle and exercise regularly. Regular exercise such as brisk walking, swimming, aerobics and yoga in mid-life helps forestall and prevent memory problems that often come with aging. In later years, regular exercise and physical activity can actually improve the brain function of people with mild cognitive impairment. There is no need to overdo it – mild to moderate exercise is all it takes. The key is to do it regularly.

2. Exercise and challenge your mind. An active brain stays sharp and continues to produce new connections between nerve cells. Studies have shown the benefits of regularly solving crosswords and other brain teasers. Other things to consider are reading, playing games such as chess, and learning a new hobby. Instead of watching mind numbing TV shows watch programs that provide new and thought provoking information such as shows about history and science.

3. Eat a healthy diet. A diet that is low in saturated fats, sugar, bleached white flour and junk foods and which has an abundance of colorful fruits and veggies will keep your brain sharp as well as keeping your body trim and protecting you against diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

4. Avoid and manage stress. We have all heard that stress is the silent killer and it is true. Stress also damages your brain by releasing damaging hormones. Some of the best ways to manage stress include simplifying your life, avoiding stressful situations, stopping to smell the roses from time to time, and using techniques such as yoga, meditation, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and/or MTT (Meridian Tapping Technique).

5. Get adequate sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. Restful sleep enables the body and brain to heal and recharge so that you are healthier and are able to think more clearly. Sleep also helps you have a better long-term memory.

6. Be sure to include plenty of antioxidants in your diet. Numerous studies have shown that a diet rich in antioxidants helps prevent and slow age-related declines in memory and learning. Among the very best sources of antioxidants are blueberries, dark grapes and pomegranates.

7. Incorporate plenty of essential omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. Omega-3s help protect the brain against age-related decline and maintain proper brain function throughout life. Some of the best omega-3 sources include fatty cold water fish such as tuna, sardines, mackerel, and herring.

8. Have an active social life. Talking and interacting with others keeps your brain active and sharpens thinking. According to a leading psychologist, spending only 10 minutes talking to another person can be as effective as mental exercises such as working crossword puzzles.

9. Don`t smoke. According to the Mayo Clinic, smokers have twice the risk of developing Alzheimer`s. If you do smoke, stop! Even people who have smoked for years can reduce their risk of memory problems by quitting.

10. Drink in moderation. While low to moderate amounts of alcohol, especially red wine, have been shown to protect against heart disease and cancer, heavy drinking (more than 14 drinks each week) actually shrinks brains.

Exercise Can Fight Aging

by: Ethan A. Huff

(NaturalNews) A recent study conducted by researchers from Saarland University in Germany has found that engaging in long-term physical activity results in an anti-aging effect. Telomeres, the protective caps found on the ends of cell chromosomes that gradually shorten with age, were found to shorten more slowly in athletes who exercise regularly.

Every time a cell divides, its telomeres get a little bit shorter and the cell becomes slightly more susceptible to dying. Telomeres have been compared to the plastic ends on shoelaces that prevent them from unraveling. Recent telomere research has discovered that the shortening of telomeres is directly correlated to the aging process as cell integrity slowly degrades over time.

In the study, researchers evaluated two groups of healthy, non-smoking people and two groups of professional athletes. The one athletic group was composed of athletes averaging 20 years old who were members of the German national track and field team while the other athletic group was composed of middle-aged runners who had been training since they were young.

Researchers found that in both groups of athletes, physical exercise had led to the activation of the telomerase enzyme which is responsible for producing and stabilizing telomeres. Telomerase activation led to a reduced shortening of telomeres in the athletes' leukocytes, white blood cells that protects the body against infection and disease. The most visible effect was noticed in the middle-aged participants who had been engaging in regular endurance training for several decades.

Other scientists believe that even moderate levels of exercise are responsible for slowing down the aging process and even reversing it. Many studies have shown that engaging in regular physical activity helps to prevent the onset of chronic disease and can help to lower cholesterol and reduce blood pressure. By slowing down the aging process, other diseases like cancer, stroke, and diabetes can also be prevented.

A similar study conducted in Sweden found that regular exercise also contributes to increased intelligence and boosted learning ability. More than 1.2 million 18-year-old Swedish men who enlisted for military service were evaluated. Researchers found that their intense physical training resulted in increased IQ and improved learning abilities.

Regular exercise increases blood flow to the brain which many believe helps to improve nerve function. Exercising also produces sweat which works to cleanse the body of toxic buildup and improve overall well being. A whole array of benefits can be achieved by regularly exercising.

ADHD Symptoms Caused By Lead Exposure, New Study Claims

by: S. L. Baker

(NaturalNews) What causes the frequently diagnosed behavioral problem in children known as attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) that leads to countless youngsters being given side-effect laden stimulant drugs? Research has focused on genes and, more recently, on the idea that multiple environmental triggers could be the cause. For example, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a recent British study indicates that certain food additives like artificial colors or preservatives could cause ADHD symptoms in some children.

Now two studies — one published in the January issue of the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry and the other published in the February issue of the journal Current Directions in Psychological Science — provide the best evidence yet that lead could be one of the biggest culprits behind ADHD.

At very high levels, lead poisoning can cause seizures, coma, and even kill. But it is chronic, long term exposure that is the more common health threat, especially for children. Researchers have previously linked elevated blood levels of lead in kids to problems ranging from mental retardation to learning disabilities. In a statement the media, Oregon Health and Science University researcher Joel Nigg, who co-authored both of the new studies, pointed out that almost all Americans have a low-level exposure to lead, a well-known neurotoxin, making the metal an ideal candidate for causing ADHD.

Although government regulations drastically reduced environmental exposure to lead a generation ago by regulating automobile fuel and paint ingredients, lead is still found in everything from children's costume jewelry and toys to soil and some imported candies. In fact, Dr. Nigg stated that virtually all U.S. children have measurable levels of lead in their bodies.

Research shows link between lead exposure and ADHD diagnoses
The first of Dr. Nigg's recent studies looked at lead levels found in 236 children between the ages of six and 17 diagnosed with ADHD. When these measurements were compared to those of a control group of children without ADHD symptoms, the researchers found that the children diagnosed with hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms (not inattention) had slightly higher levels of lead in their blood. In a second study, the research team concluded there was a much stronger link between blood lead levels and whether children were reported by parents and teachers to have ADHD symptoms.

According to the press statement, Dr. Nigg has an explanation for how lead could cause ADHD. Bottom line: he thinks lead attaches to sites in the brain's striatum and frontal cortex where the metal causes specific genes to turn on or remain inactive. This disrupts brain activity and alters psychological processes supported by these neurons, he theorizes, and contributes to hyperactivity and lack of vigilance.

What can parents do if they are concerned over their youngsters' exposure to lead? First, be aware that more than 80 percent of American homes built before 1978 have lead-based paint in them, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) — so avoid old paint flakes and paint dust if you remodel. Older homes also frequently have lead in the water pipes or plumbing. That makes tap water a potentially dangerous source of lead.

Although it takes chelation with drugs to remove very high levels of lead from the body, the Minnesota Department of Health's Lead Poisoning Prevention web site offers these additional tips to keep lead levels in children as low as possible through good nutrition:

• Because it is easier to absorb lead on an empty stomach, kids should eat four to six small meals a day.

• Normal levels of iron can protect against lead's harmful effects. So make sure children eat iron-rich foods including raisins, prunes, and other dried fruits.

• Calcium also reduces lead exposure. Serve youngsters calcium-rich foods including yogurt, cheese, spinach, kale, collard greens, and other green leafy vegetables.
