Five Exercises To Boost Colon Health

Exercise creates an overall more efficient gastrointestinal system that has an enhanced amount of circulation and blood flow, allowing the colon to perform at an optimal level.

Thanks to busy schedules and the hectic pace of modern life, not everyone can hit the gym five times a week. However, simply increasing the overall physical activity performed over the course of the day can drastically improve colon health. This can mean anything from taking the stairs instead of the elevator, to parking in the last row at the grocery store and walking across the lot. No matter how busy a person is, there is always room for some extra exercise.

To maintain the best colon health possible, the following five exercises have been recommended as great ways to strengthen the colon and surrounding abdominal muscles and to increase the efficiency of the organ and the other elements of the digestive system.

1. Walking, jogging, or running. These are three exercises that are similar and require no equipment at all; simply getting up and moving can improve blood flow throughout the intestinal tract and enhance the efficiency of the digestive system as a whole. Walking is the most mild of these exercises and can be safe and effective if a relatively quick pace is maintained. Jogging, on the other hand, can be hard on the knees and other joints of the body. To minimize the amount of damage that jogging causes, it is recommended that joggers stick to the softest terrain possible. Dirt or grass works best, but if given the choice between asphalt and concrete, choose asphalt. Running is also effective, but is best maintained by individuals that are already in good shape.

2. Sit ups and crunches. These abdominal exercises strengthen core muscles, improving the body's ability to push toxins and waste out of the digestive system quickly. This is key to improving the health of the colon; as the longer these substances take to get through the system, the more likely they are to cause health issues.

3. Yoga. Not only is yoga a great way to wind down and relieve stress, but it also strengthens the abdominal muscles and increases their flexibility. Some particularly colon-friendly poses are: crow yoga pose, headstand, inverted staff pose, cobra yoga pose, and hero pose.

4. Jumping rope. Though the specific benefits that this exercise provides to the colon are, as of yet, undefined, jumping rope has been proven to increase the heart rate and blood flow, which enhances the overall efficiency of the body's many systems. Additionally, it is believed that jumping rope cleans the organs, something from which the colon and the rest of the intestinal tract benefit greatly.

5. Trampoline exercise. Called "rebounding" by some, jumping on a trampoline can increase the strength of core muscles, enhance peristaltic movement in the body, and increase the effectiveness of the major organs, one of which being the colon. Not only are trampoline exercises good for the colon, but they are also fun and can provide an exciting change of pace in an otherwise mundane exercise routine.

Increase Longevity – Start Volunteering For the Right Reasons

People, who regularly volunteer and for the pure satisfaction of helping others, were shown to improve their longevity compared both to their non-volunteering counterparts and, better yet, even to those who volunteered but only for a personal benefit.

Researchers from the University of Michigan concluded this after studying a group of Wisconsin high school graduates from 1957. The researchers caught up with over 3,000 of these individuals, who were now age 65 years or older. They found that a little over half of them had volunteered in the previous 10 years, and when contacted four years later, just 2.3 % of the volunteers had died, compared to 4.3% of non-volunteers.

The frequency of volunteer time mattered as well, showing that less than 2% of the regular volunteers had died opposed to 2.5% of occasional volunteers.

The most interesting findings of the study, though, revealed how motives for volunteering can have dramatic effects on our mortality. The participants, who volunteered and did it for compassionate reasons, were more likely to gain the most health benefits.

However, the ones who volunteered but only did it for personal gain or self growth, such as social interaction, getting out of the house, escaping their own problems, etc., were as likely to die as those who didn't volunteer at all.

Volunteer work, when the motive is genuine, can have amazing physical benefits such as:

– Stress reduction: when helping others, your body releases an important hormone called oxytocin, which assists in buffering out stressful thoughts.
– Even thoughts of giving have effects on certain chemicals of the brain, such as dopamine and serotonin ( both have been linked with depression and other mood disorders).
– Self confidence: when you are passionate about something and helping others in need, your self esteem will build and confidence levels grow.
– Helping others has shown to help with chronic pain and cardiovascular health.

Aside from the health benefits, volunteering can connect you to others and create meaningful and sincere relationships, and it also brings great fulfillment to your life.

“Trusted” Activist Groups Have Betrayed Food Freedom

At first glance, organizations such as the Organic Consumers Association (OCA), the Center for Food Safety (CFS) and the International Center for Technology Assessment (CTA) appear to be firmly aligned in favor of organic farming.  Both sites are filled with information about food safety and organic farming, including many entries touting the actions they have taken on behalf of both issues.  However, a closer examination of the organizations raises questions as to whether they may in some instances be working against organic farming as well as against food freedom and in favor of the pharmaceutical industries.

While some good information can be obtained at the sites of all three organizations, there is also some very questionable information.  For example, the OCA site contains an article by Cornucopia which they distributed widely which touts allowing the dangerous substance Neotame to be added to organic products.  The article stated in part:

““None of the bloggers who perpetuate this anti-organic myth reference primary sources to substantiate their claims. As their sources, they reference one another instead of going to the source – such as the Code of Federal Regulations.”

Anti-organic myth? The statement is demonstrably false and Neotame is obviously dangerous.  Neotame is a neurotoxin and a document taken from the FDA site states that pre-approval studies indicated that Neotame is not safe, yet it “was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for general use in July 2002” and is allowed to be added to organic food products as a “general sweetener”.  See:

The CFS organization applauded the passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act (S. 510) by the United States Congress – a bill which has been roundly criticized by those of us who support health and food freedom for the power it gives the FDA and the negative impact it would have on food freedom and organic farming.  Upon passage of the bill, the CFS issued the following statement:

“The Center for Food Safety (CFS) applauds the passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act (S. 510) by the United States Congress. The bill which passed the House of Representatives by over seventy votes late yesterday will give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) a greater ability to safeguard our nation’s food system.” (TrueFoodNow)

The CFS, along with its sister organization the CTA, initiated a petition to the EPA to regulate nano-silver as a pesticide, which would have hugely benefited Big Pharma by virtually eliminating colloidal silver as a competitor to their more expensive and dangerous anti-biotic and anti-viral drugs. Though the groups denied targeting colloidal silver, their petition listed top colloidal silver products as examples of items which they felt should be regulated.

So, why would organizations which purport to champion organic farming support actions which are so detrimental to organic foods?  Perhaps for the same reason that the CFS, ICA and other activist groups made their pro Big Pharma petition to the EPA: because they are heavily funded by philanthropy organizations which are linked to drugs and the promotion of GMOs.

Follow the money and one will find that the OCA, CFS and CTA have received millions of dollars in funding from Merck and Rockefeller philanthropy organizations (the John Merck fund and the Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors).  Neither of those groups are considered to be friends to natural health and It should be noted that funding from philanthropy groups tied to corporate entities such as Merck and Rockefeller most often disburse funds with the expectation of a return on their philanthropic “investment”.

Merck is the pharmaceutical company who gave us such killer drugs as Vioxx, Gardasil and Fosamax. Widely regarded as one of the more evil corporations in the world, Merck would benefit hugely from regulation of nano-silver as a pesticide and it should be noted that it is not in the corporate interest of Merck to foster healthier people.

Rockefeller is the name of the family which helped found and support the American Medical Association, which endeavored successfully to eliminate and suppress homeopathy and natural healing in order to give mainstream medicine a monopoly on our health.  See:

In addition, the Rockefeller Foundation is reported by F. William Engdahl in the book “Seeds of Destruction” to have spent more than $100 million for the advance of the GMO revolution.  As Engdahl also reported, a Rockefeller created front organization, CGIAR (Consultative Group on Agricultural Resources), operates under the umbrella of the UN World Bank, and its primary focus is the spread of GMO crops. “Financed by generous Rockefeller and Ford Foundation study grants, CGIAR saw to it that leading Third World agriculture scientists and agronomists were brought to the US to master the concepts of modern agribusiness production, in order to carry it back to their homeland. In the process they created an invaluable network of influence for US agribusiness promotion in those countries, most especially promotion of the GMO Gene Revolution in developing countries, all in the name of science and efficient, free market agriculture.”

Extreme Measures Used To Target Rawesome Foods

(NaturalNews) Examples of government-sponsored terrorism against innocent Americans continue to pour in to NaturalNews, and no case better demonstrates it than the Rawesome Foods raid and the ongoing persecution of its organizers. In court proceedings last Thursday, LA County prosecutor Kelly Sakir turned over 1,097 pages of "discovery" documents to the defendants' attorneys, revealing an utterly astonishing campaign of spying, surveillance, and entrapment that has targeted Rawesome Foods for at least the last two years.

NaturalNews has learned that at least three undercover operatives were hired by the LA County prosecutor's office to infiltrate Rawesome Foods and sign up as members while covertly filming their actions using hidden cameras in their purses. These cameras almost certainly captured video footage of other members at Rawesome Foods, meaning the government itself stands in violation of wiretapping laws that it often uses against innocent civilians who try to videotape traffic stops by local police.

NaturalNews has also learned that there are 42 discs of additional evidence which has been gathered by the LA County prosecutor — including interviews with the operatives, covert camera footage, documents and even video footage from a surveillance pole camera that LA County set up across the street to spy on Rawesome Foods.

What's clear from this is that Kelly Sakir is out for blood and is on some sort of bizarre punitive rampage against James Stewart in particular and health freedom in general. Call their Major Crimes Division at (213) 974-3800 and explain that Kelly Sakir is running a major criminal operation against innocent LA County citizens who are merely distributing wholesome food to private members. Sakir sure looks a lot more like the criminal here than James Stewart!

In my opinion, Kelly Sakir is the real criminal in all this, and if any money should be spent on surveillance at all, it should be spent keeping an eye on Sakir and her abuse of government power. This is a clear-cut case for a criminal investigation in Kelly Sakir's abuse of power and violation of the civil rights of James Stewart and others. The LA County DA's office should investigate Kelly Sakir, I say, and potentially bring charges for her outrageous waste of taxpayer dollars and for waging a completely unjustified personal war against Rawesome Foods which poses no threat whatsoever to the public at large.

Her abuse of power is so clear-cut that if you open an encyclopedia and turn to the entry for "government abuse of power," it should have Kelly Sakir's mug shot there.

This woman is an embarrassment to law enforcement, an embarrassment to the people of LA County, and an embarrassment to the very idea of justice in America. I think Sakir is a power-tripping paranoid sociopath who will apparently waste any amount of LA County taxpayer dollars in her quest to destroy her targeted enemies, even when they pose no threat to the public.

BPA Levels in People Far Higher Than Previously Thought

(NaturalNews) New studies reveal that levels of BPA are massively higher in humans than previously assumed, causing major concern for what has been downplayed by the packaging industry as a false alarm.

BPA, or Bisphenol-A, leaches into food from plastic packaging and from the linings of canned foods, causing cancerous tumors and developmental disorders, including learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, and deformations of sexual organs, especially in newborns.

The CDC estimates that over 90% of people in the U.S. are chronically exposed to BPA at over 3000 times the daily level that the FDA reports. Maybe this monstrous difference comes from the fact that the FDA standards ignored more than 100 credible research experiments and studies other than their own. The new FDA regulatory language offers to seek "further public comment and external input on the science surrounding BPA," but industry lobbyists argue about "safe levels" and do their best to muddy those waters in order to keep the profits margins maximized.

Much of the latest research and testing of chemicals in foods is being conducted by the very companies that sell them, or by independent labs hired and well paid to conclude that there is "insufficient evidence of levels harmful to humans." The FDA and the CDC use the rationale that what kills rats in labs may not have the same effect on humans, but this time, hundreds of tests done on humans reveal otherwise.

The BPA label is either on the side or bottom of bottles in black or clear numbers, usually inside of the recycling sign formed by circular arrows. The number 2 means your food is contaminated by aluminum and polyethylene plastic, and the number 7 means there is BPA in your polycarbonate container.

To make things worse, if the bottles or cans have been sitting on the shelf at the grocery for months, the toxic levels of BPA are higher, and since there's no "born-on date," like beer might have, there's no telling the age of the container. Also, if the plastic gets heated up, like in a car, more toxins are released into the drink. Plus, canned goods are sterilized at up to 265% Fahrenheit, so the level of BPA released in those foods is horrendous, not to mention the fact that all of the nutrients at that temperature have been depleted from the source. Metal cans have no warning or indicator whatsoever about BPA.

The remedy is to simply buy glass only and not have to worry about BPA, but then don't forget to check for sodium benzoate, BHA, BHT, EDTA, and the other "preservative" criminals.

BPA was originally developed in the 1930's as a synthetic version of the female hormone estrogen. BPA is an endocrine disrupter, meaning it is a chemical that interferes with the hormone system in animals, including humans. Wondering why kids are more hyperactive these days and the doctors suggest prescribing ADHD pharmaceuticals? Bisphenol-A mimics estrogenic activity and enhances mesolimbic dopamine activity, which results in hyperactivity and attention deficits. Still have canned sodas on your grocery list?

Ordered up by the USA at 8 billion pounds per year, BPA is one of the highest volume chemicals produced by mankind, having adverse effects in mammals and invertebrates all over the world. Canned goods sell particularly well in times of recession and financial stress. In February of 2009, the United States saw an 11.5% rise in canned food sales alone. The highest concentrations recorded are in chicken soup, infant formula and ravioli. By the way, it's also in your dental fillings.

The EPA has not even evaluated BPA for possible carcinogenic activity, and food packaging executives and lobbyists are still planning to use a pregnant woman in their advertising in order to reassure Americans that BPA is safe for children. Remember, an advertisement's slogan is often a cover up for the product's greatest weakness.

Swine Flu Vaccine Causes Chronic Nervous System Disorders

(NaturalNews) The nation of Finland has now openly admitted that the swine flu vaccine "conclusively" causes narcolepsy, a chronic nervous system disorder that makes people uncontrollably fall asleep. The Finnish government, in acknowledging this link, says it will pay for "lifetime medical care" for 79 children who have been irreparably damaged by the swine flu vaccine.

Narcolepsy isn't the only side effect now admitted to be caused by swine flu vaccines: 76 of the 79 children also suffered hallucinations and "paralyzing physical collapses," say Finnish researchers.

Remarkably, even though the link between swine flu vaccines and permanent neurological damage in children is now openly admitted by the Finnish government, there is absolutely no talk about halting the utterly unscientific ritual of injecting children with flu vaccines in the first place. Not only are flu vaccines harmful to children (as is now admitted), but flu vaccines don't even work! U.S. refuses to admit vaccines harm anyone
The U.S. government, of course, still refuses to admit vaccines cause any harm whatsoever. Both the government and the vaccine industry continue to push the fabricated fairy tale that "vaccines are safe and effective," meaning they harm no one but help everyone. Yet the truth is practically the polar opposite: Vaccines harm countless millions of children each year in ways that are usually never linked to vaccines (mild mental retardation, suppressed immune function, learning disabilities, etc.). At the same time, vaccines are all but worthless at preventing infections. There was a large increase in the proportion of thyroid cancer patients receiving radioactive iodine between 1990 and 2008 even though radioactive iodine is a cause of thyroid cancer. Between 1990 and 2008, the percentage of patients treated with radioactive iodine climbed from 40 to 56 percent, and hospitals varied widely in their use of iodine. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, there are more than 40,000 new cases of thyroid cancer every year in the U.S. — a number that's been climbing steadily.

The downsides of radioactive iodine are clear: the therapy saps patients' energy and ups their risk of developing new cancers down the road, and it costs thousands of dollars. "There are a lot of patients who are receiving radioactive iodine for what is considered low-risk tumors," said Dr. David J. Sher, a cancer expert at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. "These patients generally have a superb prognosis without radioactive iodine."

How senseless can oncologists get?

Pretty senseless! The first thing you see on many different medical sites is the following medical ignorance — "The Cause of Thyroid Cancer is Unknown." This is really not true but they say it is true to hide decades of deliberate movement away from the vital importance of iodine, not only for thyroid health but for general health as well. Because non-radioactive iodine acts to block radioactive iodine from being taken into the thyroid gland, it can help protect the thyroid gland from injury.

Nobody in contemporary medicine wants to step out and just say it as it is — that iodine deficiency causes thyroid cancer. Some sites to their credit do say that certain risk factors for thyroid cancer include:

– A history of thyroid disease (iodine deficiency)
– Exposure to radiation, especially in childhood
– An inherited abnormal gene or a bowel condition called FAP
– Having low iodine levels
– Goiter (iodine deficiency)

As far back as the early 1920s, L. Goldemberg showed that fluoride was displacing iodine, rendering the community hypothyroid from iodine deficiency. The thyroid-stimulating hormone output from the pituitary gland is inhibited by fluoride, thus reducing output of thyroid hormones. Fluoride competes for the receptor sites on the thyroid gland and so do mercury and bromide. This contamination might also invite an autoimmune response. Western medical science has allowed itself to be totally corrupted by its pharmaceutical masters and cannot even bring itself to acknowledge fluoride and bromide as thyroid disrupters and causes of certain thyroid cancers.

Iodine Deficiencies

People who have low iodine levels are more likely to get thyroid cancer than those who do not. Low iodine levels also cause goiter (an enlarged thyroid) and this increases the chance of developing thyroid cancer. If there are low levels of iodine in the soil where you live, there may be low levels in your drinking water and any local milk, meat or vegetables you buy. Smoking can also lower iodine levels. Pregnancy? increases the body's demands for iodine.

If certain people had their way they would now take iodine out of salt, which is the only way the masses of humanity have access to supplemental iodine even though the dosages provided are far too low to protect the thyroid from the onslaught of chemical and heavy metal contamination. It is just because of the vast contamination affecting everyone that the thyroid needs to be protected with increased levels of iodine.

Doctors who would leave the population exposed to worsening iodine deficiencies are playing a cruel game. Iodine is extremely important since the cells need it to regulate their metabolism. Without it, people are known to suffer from swollen glands in the throat, thyroid diseases, increased fluoride toxicity, decreased fertility rates, increased infant mortality rates, and (with severe deficiency) mental retardation. It has been theorized that iodine deficiency is one causal factor of ADHD in babies of iodine-deficient mothers.

Iodine deficiency slows all the systems of the body: The digestive system becomes sluggish, nails grow more slowly, skin and hair become dry and dull, tendon reflexes stiffen, sensitivity to cold increases, and the pulse slows. Iodine helps form who we are to such an extent that a deficiency can lead to a dulling of the personality, deterioration of attention and memory, and an increase in irritability due to fatigue and extreme apathy. "The group we are most concerned about is pregnant women, who need more iodine anyway," says Dr. Robert Utiger, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. "There is the possibility of irreversible damage to the fetus if the mother is deficient," Utiger adds.

When faced with a radioactive cloud, as is everyone in the northern hemisphere thanks to Fukushima, it is absolutely imperative that we take iodine, whatever iodine you can get your hands on. If the only iodine available is topical iodine that is not suitable for oral use then you should paint your body and your children's bodies with it. Few people have ready access to the Nascent iodine so will not enjoy its ease of application in repeated measured dosages that are more gentle to the system, thus yielding fewer side effects. Because Nascent is in the atomic form (I1), it is absorbed faster and that can also be advantageous in emergency situations when fighting infections with it. Its only downside is the expense of having to use so much of it, so for those who cannot afford it and cannot get their hands on it, I recommend Lugol's, which has been around and used heavily for 150 years.

Dr. Brownstein writes, "If there is enough inorganic, non-radioactive iodine in our bodies, the radioactive fallout has nowhere to bind in our bodies. It will pass through us, leaving our bodies unharmed. It is important to ensure that we have adequate iodine levels before this fallout hits."

Dr. Michael B. Schachter says, "The treatment dose when a person is iodine insufficient is generally between 12.5 mg and 50 mg daily. Preliminary research indicates that if a person is iodine insufficient, it takes about three months to become iodine sufficient while ingesting a dosage of 50 mg of iodine daily and a year to achieve that while ingesting a dosage of 12.5 mg of iodine daily.

Because of the continuing radiation, it behooves us to start taking the highest dosages tolerable to protect not only our thyroids but also all the glandular tissues as well. Iodine protects the thyroid, breasts, prostate and ovary glands as well as other tissues in the body from radioactive iodine whether used by mad doctors or ingested from the environment.

Biotech’s Dirty Tricks Exposed in New Documentary: ‘Scientists Under Attack’

"You ask one question, you get the answer and you might or might not be able to publish it; but that is the end of your career." Both he and biologist Arpad Pusztai dared to asked questions and do the research. And then all hell broke lose.

Using stunning visuals filmed on three continents, veteran German filmmaker Bertram Verhaag tracks the fate of these two scientists at the hands of a multi-billion dollar industry that is desperate to hide the dangers of their genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The insect-killing, career-ending potato

When Dr. Pusztai voiced his concerns about the health risks of genetically modified (GM) foods during a nationally televised interview in August 1998, his was not simply just another voice in a contentious debate. Pusztai was the world leader in his field, and he had received major government funding to come up with the official method for testing the safety of GM foods. His protocols were supposed to become the required tests before any new GMO entered the European market. Pusztai was an insider, and an advocate of GM foods — that is until he actually ran those tests on supposedly harmless GM potatoes.

The high-tech spuds were engineered to produce their own pesticide. "The point of the whole genetic modification experiment was to protect the potato against aphids, which are one of the major pests in Scotland," he said. His team inserted a gene from the snowdrop plant into the potatoes, which did in fact protect the GM crop from the insects.

As part of his safety studies, he fed that insecticide producing GM potato to rats, along with a complete and balanced diet. Another group of rats ate natural potatoes. A third was fed not only the natural potatoes, but they also received a dose of the same insecticide that the GM potato produced. This way, if the insecticide was harmful, he would see the same health problems in both the group that ate the GM potatoes, and those that ate the diet spiked with the insecticide. To his surprise, only those that ate the GM potato had severe problems — in every organ and every system he looked at.

Massive health problems linked to GMOs
"After the animals were killed and dissected," Pusztai recalled, "we found out that in comparison with the non-genetically modified potatoes, their internal organs developed differently." The intestines and stomach lining, for example, increased in size, the liver and kidneys were smaller, and the overall rate of growth was retarded. And the immune system suffered. Pusztai emphasized, "They found in those data 36 – 36! very highly significant differences between the GM-fed animals and the non-GM fed animals."

Since the rats that ate the natural potatoes plus the insecticide did not have these issues, there was one obvious conclusion — the process of genetically engineering the potatoes caused unpredicted side effects, turning a harmless food into a dangerous one.

When Pusztai saw the extensive damage that his potatoes caused in the lab animals, he also realized that if biotech companies had done the safety studies, the dangerous potatoes would have easily made it to market. He knew this because a few months earlier, he had reviewed the confidential submissions from the biotech companies which allowed their GM soy and corn onto the market. "They were flimsy," he said. "They were not scientifically well founded." They would never detect the changes in GMO-fed animals.

Reading the industry studies was a turning point in Pusztai's life. He realized what he was doing and what the industry scientists were doing was diametrically opposed. He was doing safety studies. Companies like Monsanto, on the other hand, were doing as little as possible to get their foods on the market as quickly as possible.

Pusztai also realized that the GM soy and corn already on the market had been produced using the same process that had created his dangerous potato. Thus, the GM crops being consumed in the UK and the US might lead to similar damage in the gut, brain and organs of the entire population.

Thus, during his TV interview, Pusztai flatly stated: "If I had the choice, I would certainly not eat [GM foods] until I see at least comparable experimental evidence which we are producing for genetically modified potatoes."

Ambushed
After the TV show aired, Pusztai was a hero at his prestigious Rowett Institute, where the director praised his work to the press, calling it world-class research. After two days of high-profile media coverage throughout Europe, however, the director received two phone calls from the UK Prime Minister's Office.

"It's only when we think there was political pressure coming from the top that the situation changed," said Pusztai. "And then the director, to save his own skin, decided that the best way to deal with the situation [was] A) to destroy me, B) to make me shut up."

Pusztai was told the next morning that his contract would not be renewed, he was silenced with threats of a lawsuit, his team was disbanded, and the protocols were not to be implemented in GMO safety assessments. And then came the attacks.

Coordinated between the Institute, biotech academics, and even the pro-GMO UK government, a campaign to destroy Pusztai's reputation was launched. They were determined to counter the negative media coverage and protect the reputation of GMOs — even if it meant promoting blatant lies and sacrificing a top scientist's career. Because Pusztai was gagged, he said, "whatever they did say on TV, radio and wrote in the newspapers, I could not deny it, I could not correct it, I could not say what was the real situation."

"The most hurtful thing of all," remembers Pusztai's wife Susan, "was that he wasn't allowed to talk to his colleagues and his colleagues were not allowed to talk to him. So whenever he entered a room, they went silent within seconds."

After seven excruciating months, a committee at the UK Parliament invited Pusztai to speak. This lifted the gag order, which allowed Pusztai to ultimately publish his research, and be interviewed for this film.

Oops — GMOs weren't supposed to be there
Ignacio Chapela, a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, had "a long-term relationship with a group of indigenous communities" in Mexico. Although GM corn was not yet legally grown in the country, Chapela decided to equip the Mexicans with a laboratory that could test for its presence, in case GMOs were eventually introduced. To help with the training, his colleague David Quist brought GM corn from the US. For the non-GM control corn, Chapela said, "we thought we should just use the local corn, which, of course, is going to be clean and wonderful. And the surprise came when the negative control started coming out positive. That means we started finding transgenic materials where they were not supposed to be."

Chapela says, "The reason why our findings were so astounding was because it was thought that there was no transgenic corn being planted in Mexico at all. And people wanted it that way. . . . Why? Because Mexico is the center of origin of corn. The Mexican government was worried about maintaining the integrity of the land races." Apparently GM corn imported as food was unknowingly being grown, and had already started contaminating the source of corn's biodiversity.

According to Chapela the industry "had been telling the world that they really had control over these crops, that if they planted . . . transgenic corn in one field, that transgenic corn would not go anywhere else. So our discovery that we were finding transgenic corn maybe a thousand miles from the nearest legal transgenic corn field was a huge problem for them because it really showed very simply, and with real evidence, that they really did not have control."

Chapela and Quist wrote up the finding, which was accepted for publication by the prominent journal Nature. This made "many people within the industry very nervous and very unhappy," says Chapella. They "started a discreditation campaign for the paper. They did not want the paper to be published."

Unable to stop Nature, however, a Monsanto PR company — the Bivings Group — deployed plan B. "They created two fictitious characters, two doctors," recounts Chapela. "And these two doctors went on the internet and started spreading rumors that what we had said was false and that the paper was flawed." The disinformation campaign went viral. It put huge pressure on Nature, spread the false notion that contamination had not taken place, and resulted in a campaign against Chapela by biotech advocates in his University.

"In my case," says Chapela, "I was pushed out of the university at least three times. Every time I fought back and we managed to keep my job. But it's been very difficult."

Trashing scientists worldwide
The treatment of Pusztai and Chapela illustrates what happens around the world to scientists who discover harm from GM crops. The work of Russian scientist Irina Ermakova, for example, was viciously attacked, and there were repeated attempts to intimidate her: papers were burnt on her desk and samples were stolen from her lab.

Peeking through these stories of personal attacks are the very real dangers of GMOs, which compel the audience to question the use of GMOs in their own diets. Consider the impact of Ermakova's research on young women planning to raise a family. After she fed genetically engineered soy flour to female rats, more than half of their offspring died within three weeks.

The film also unravels the claims of biotech benefits on the farm level. A visit to Brazil introduces herbicide-tolerant Roundup Ready soybeans, engineered to make weeding a field easier. Farmers can spray Monsanto's Roundup herbicide right on the field, and the GMOs survive. But this has led to massive overuse of Roundup, which in turn has led to the emergence of herbicide-tolerant superweeds — no longer controllable with Roundup.

A natural reaction to these stories might be to ask why isn't the government telling us the truth and protecting us. Unfortunately, they are part of the problem.

FDA cover-up
The FDA scientists who reviewed GMOs in the early 1990s were uniformly concerned about their health impacts, according to attorney Andrew Kimbrell, who runs the D.C.-based Center for Food Safety. He was on the team that sued the FDA in 1998, forcing them to turn over nearly 60,000 pages of secret internal memos. Kimbrell extracts key memos from massive filing cabinets in his office, reading the scientists' warnings: toxins, nutritional problems, loss of biodiversity, change in water use, etc.

"So the scientists asked for these studies," says Kimbrell. "But the politicians at the FDA and in the administration at that time said no. They suppressed the science. And these questions, these studies, have never been done."

Instead, the US government maintains the illusion that nothing is wrong, and that this science works just as the biotech companies are telling us. This is beautifully illustrated with excerpts of biotech apologist Nina Fedoroff, the former science advisor to the Secretary of State. Her bland assurances about the safety of GMOs crumble with each new revelation in the film.

Unprecedented risks; no benefits
"No one gets up in the morning saying I want to go buy a genetically engineered food," says Kimbrell. "They offer no benefits, no more nutrition, no more flavor, no nothing. They only offer risks." He says the average rational person would ask, "Why would I buy a food that offers me no new benefits but only risks?" Kimbrell, who wrote the book Your Right to Know, says it was "critical for the industry to get these foods out without anyone knowing, because if they knew, they would obviously choose not to buy them."

But as Chapela's discovery of self-propagating GMO contamination illustrates, the risk of GMOs extends well beyond individual considerations. He warns, "We are manipulating life in a way that we really do not understand, we cannot control, and then we're letting it go into the environment. So it's a change that is radical, that is unprecedented, that is beyond anything we can understand, and it is irretrievable. We cannot get it back. That's my concern!"

BPA is a hormone-mimicking toxin that also has recently been found to impact our DNA and to kill off female ovarian cells in a way that may cause Down Syndrome and fertility problems in future generations. While BPA shouldn't be in any of us, children are thought to be the most susceptible and the soups and pastas tested were marketed toward children.

In the testing, 34 to 148 parts per billion of BPA were found in the soups and 10 to 34 ppb in the pastas. A few months ago, the FDA also found BPA in 71 of 78 canned goods they tested. The FDA also tested different types of foods, including canned tuna and vegetables, and in these foods they found much higher levels of BPA – ranging from 300 ppb to more than 700 parts per billion.

Some research shows that BPA is eliminated quickly from the body, but the problem with this research is that it looks at it from a one-time dose situation, as opposed to a more true to life repeated exposure situation. And with continual exposure, it tends to accumulate.

Canned foods are also not the only foods contaminated with BPA; it's also in plastic wrapped food products. And according to Environmental Working Group research, it's in the blood of 9 out of 10 infants at birth.

Cheryl Rosenfeld and her colleagues from the University of Missouri, Columbia looked at BPA exposure from a different angle and tested mice with a more true to life scenario. They fed these mice food laced with a little BPA each day and found that with chronic dietary exposure, the animals exhibited "the potential to bioaccumulate BPA over time." Then Rosenfeld tells us that there's no reason to expect the human body would respond any differently.

The researchers also found that BPA absorbs in the body in a greater degree when it is consumed with food, rather than taken as a one-time dose without food.

"What we found," Rosenfeld said, "is that when animals are exposed through the diet, they actually show increased absorption of BPA" as opposed to when they get a single larger dose.
