As NaturalNews has reported previously, researchers are uncovering specific natural strategies that appear to prevent and treat the disease Big Pharma has failed so miserably in curing. Now there's another promising development, a study in elderly people shows specific nutrients may prevent Alzheimer's.

According to new research just published in the online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, those who eat foods rich in several vitamins and in omega 3 fatty acids are far less likely to have the brain shrinkage associated with Alzheimer's disease than people whose diets are not high in those nutrients.

What's more, people who eat foods loaded with omega 3 fatty acids (found in cold water fish like salmon and certain plant sources, including walnuts) and in vitamins C, D, E and the vitamin B (from fruits and vegetables) also have sharper cognitive abilities. The bottom line is that seniors who consume plenty of B,C and E vitamins as well as omega 3s score far better on mental thinking tests than people with diets low in those nutrients.

So what happens to people who eat the typical American diet of nutritionally deficit junk and fast foods? They may literally be killing their brains and bringing on Alzheimer's disease. The new study showed that people with diets high in trans fats — which are found in packaged, fast, fried and frozen food, and margarine spreads — were more likely to have shrinking brain tissue that's linked to AD. They also scored lower on thinking skills and memory tests than people with diets low in trans fats.

First study to link nutrients in blood to brain shrinkage and dementia
In all, the research involved 104 people with an average age of 87 who had few risk factors for memory and thinking problems. Lab tests were performed to measure levels of various nutrients present in the blood of each research subject. All of the study participants also took cognitive tests to measure their memory and thinking skills and 42 had MRI scans to measure their brain volume. Vitamin B 12 and especially vitamin D were found to be the nutrients most lacking in the research subjects. In fact, a whopping 25 percent of all the research subjects had a deficit in vitamin D.

The study, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute on Aging and National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, Portland VA Medical Center, was the very first to look for nutrients in the blood to investigate how diet effects memory, thinking skills and brain volume.

Earlier studies have focused on only one or a few nutrients at a time and have used questionnaires to assess people's diets. But questionnaires are known to be somewhat unreliable; they rely on people's memory of what they've eaten and they also don't measure how well nutrients are absorbed by the body, which can be problematic in elders.

In a statement to the media, study author Gene Bowman, ND, MPH, of Oregon Health and Science University in Portland and a member of the American Academy of Neurology, said that the nutrient biomarkers in the blood accounted for a significant amount of the variation in both brain volume, thinking and memory scores. "These results need to be confirmed, but obviously it is very exciting to think that people could potentially stop their brains from shrinking and keep them sharp by adjusting their diet," Dr. Bowman stated.

In other hopeful news about Alzheimer's, the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) is currently studying herbal preparations made from the leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree. In preliminary reports, IQWiG scientists have found the natural treatments appear to improve symptoms of the disease, including the ability of some AD patients to regain the ability to perform daily tasks.

Sunshine Helps Prevent Skin Cancer While Sunscreens Promote It

The other two non-melanoma types, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma, are treatable and not as threatening or able to metastasize as melanoma.

Sloppy science that harms more than helps

There are two basic types of ultra-violet (UV) rays from the sun that affect us: UVA and UVB. Ultra-violet A (UVA) rays have little or no benefit, and can cause some skin damage that initially shows as sunburn and eventually dries and ages the skin. UVA rays are steady throughout the day. Most sunscreens do not block harmful UVA rays. But most of them contain toxic and carcinogenic ingredients.

Natural lotions and many European sunscreens are more beneficial and less toxic. This requires some serious label reading. Simply using coconut oil, sunflower oil, jojoba (hoHOba) oil, eucalyptus oil, or shea butter is easier for preventing sun burn if you’re concerned.

Glass windows and windshields do not filter out UVA rays. But they do manage to block UVB rays. UVB rays are involved with the beginning of a body’s vitamin D3 production. And UVB rays peak during mid-day and are strongest during summers and nearer the equator. They are not the same throughout the day as UVA rays are.

So the sloppy science says you must deprive yourself of sun bestowing vitamin D3 that helps to prevent cancer and boost the immune system while slathering your body with carcinogenic sunscreens that don’t even block UVA rays. Makes no sense, does it?

Actually, those two medical suggestions have probably caused more skin cancer. Over the past few decades, skin cancer cases, especially melanoma, have risen dramatically. And it was a few decades ago that the sun-skin cancer links were made. This made selling sun screen lotions easy with no research on their harmful ingredients or inability to deflect UVA rays. That’s not unusual for FDA approvals.

It’s wise to pull out of the sun if your fair skin gets pink to avoid sunburn. As you tan, your sun exposure endurance increases. And don’t worry about vitamin D3 toxicity from sunlight. It’s almost impossible. As your D3 blood level increases, the body simply produces less regardless of the sun exposure time.

There are many overly tanned skinned retirees (who golf often and play lots of tennis), who can attest to their sun soaked boundless energy and good health.

Many consider 8,000 to 10,000 iu (international unit) dosages safe for almost everyone, though it’s wise to test D3 blood serum levels. Sometimes more is used under short term dire conditions, up to 50,000 ius, without toxicity.

#8 – Clinical trials invalidated by influence of the mind
The entire basis from which "scientific" medicine is validated was called into question in 2011 with new findings about the power of the mind to override biochemistry. All of Big Pharma's clinical trials, in other words, may be utterly invalid.

#9 – HPV vaccines found contaminated with DNA / RNA of HPV

US Government Censors Findings Of Deadly H5N1 Bird Flu Experiment

(NaturalNews) After toying with the idea of blocking public access to critical information discovered as part of an experiment with H5N1 avian flu, the US government has now decided that certain details of this controversial research be withdrawn from two scientific journals. The UK's Guardian reports that the journals Science and Nature are working to remove certain details from the research that terrorists may try to use to create biological weapons.

The controversy stems from research conducted by Dr. Ron Fouchier from Erasmus Medical Centre in the Netherlands, who deliberately created a deadly strain of H5N1 that is capable of spreading among mammals, including humans. NaturalNews reported on this intentional "militarization" of H5N1 last month, when the government was still considering what to do with the new-found information.

According to Science Insider, Dr. Fouchier told reporters that he and his team's deliberate mutation of H5N1 had created "probably one of the most dangerous viruses you can make." US National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) chair Paul Keim added, "I can't think of another pathogenic organism that is as scary as this one. I don't think anthrax is scary at all compared to this."

The only problem with the government deciding to pull this sensitive information now, though, is that it has already been made public at recent conferences where the findings were discussed. In other words, the government is trying to "[shut] the stable doors after the horse has bolted," to quote the words of former chief virologist of the UK's National Institute for Biological Standards and Control, John Wood.

Both journals are reportedly working on publishing edited versions of the papers that do not contain details about how the experiments were conducted, or about how the team was able to develop the highly-deadly strain. Some researchers, however, would still be able to access the original papers in their complete form, according to reports.

"The proposed reactions are nothing more than a public relations measure, a window dressing, intended to convey the impression that the issue is being addressed to minimize negative public reaction and deflect calls for effective regulation," said Richard Ebright, a professor of molecular biology at Rutgers University.

Local Residents Sue DuPont For GMO Pesticide ‘Dust’ Blowing On Homes

The Associated Press reports that 150 local residents of Waimea (on Kauai), are suing Pioneer for using undisclosed and potentially deadly pesticides on GMO crops in open-air tests. The plaintiffs claim the company has routinely failed to control the spread of these contaminants as is required by state and county law, as well as identify them publicly.

Pioneer has several GM crop test fields in the Waimea area that are located very close to residential neighborhoods. Especially on windy days, residue from pesticide sprays travels from the fields into nearby neighborhoods, according to local residents, and contaminates practically everything. And despite having filed a petition with Pioneer back in 2000 to have the situation remedied, Pioneer has allegedly done nothing over all these years to curb the uncontrolled spread of pesticide poisons.

"[T]he influx of dust and chemicals from Pioneer's fields has continued while Waimea residents fight a daily battle to keep their homes and property free of dust and chemicals. They continue to suffer on a daily basis," says the lawsuit. It goes on to state that "pesticides and fugitive dust from Pioneer's GMO Test Fields are recognized pollutants that present known and unknown risks to human health and the environment associated with acute, sub-chronic, and chronic exposure."

After filing its initial petition back in 2000, Pioneer responded by promising to clean up the problem and do what it could to prevent the spread of these airborne toxins. But more than ten years later, the problem still persists, according to the plaintiffs, which is why they have no choice but to pursue remedies through the legal system.

Worse, Pioneer has refused to disclose which pesticides it is even using in the test trials, so there is no way to know exactly what is being sprayed, and what dangers they pose. Forcing Pioneer to disclose the identities of these pesticides is the primary goal of the lawsuit, which could later develop further into a case concerning the health effects of exposure to them.

No Deaths From Vitamins In 27 Years 3 Million From Pharmaceuticals

Previous whistleblowers exposed the link between mental health drugs and suicide after it was covered up by the makers of the drugs. Eli Lilly & Co, the makers of Prozac, ignored and hid studies as far back as the 1980s that found Prozac led to suicidal thoughts. Until Harvard Physicist Martin Teicher leaked the findings to the press, the company managed to hide the news from consumers worldwide.

Teicher said that the American people were being "treated like guinea pigs in a massive pharmaceutical experiment."

Pharmaceutical drugs are loaded with toxic side effects and do not eliminate the root cause of disease they claim to treat. Killing 3 million within the last 27 years, and topping traffic fatalities each year, pharmaceutical drugs are a deadly and ineffective option when it comes to combating disease.

Regular Fish Consumption Lowers Alzheimer’s Risk

(NaturalNews) Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh found that people who eat baked or broiled fish on a weekly basis may be improving their brain health and lowering their risk of developing Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease. The results, released at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America established a direct relationship between fish consumption, brain structure and Alzheimer's risk. The study determined that eating baked or broiled fish once per week led to better preservation of gray matter volume on MRI scans in brain areas at risk for Alzheimer's disease. Health-minded people may be able to dramatically lower the risk of developing this most feared memory-robbing illness.

Dr. Cyrus Raji, M.D., Ph.D., from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and his team developed a cohort of 260 cognitively normal individuals. Information on fish consumption was gathered using the National Cancer Institute Food Frequency Questionnaire. 163 participants consumed fish on a weekly basis, and the majority ate fish one to four times per week.

Regular Fish Consumption Preserves Brain Volume and Cognitive Function
Each subject was examined using a 3-D volumetric MRI scan of the brain to measure gray matter volume. The test was used to model the relationship between weekly fish consumption at baseline and brain structure after a period of ten years. Data was then analyzed to determine if gray matter volume preservation associated with fish consumption reduced the risk for Alzheimer's disease. The study controlled for age, gender, education, race, obesity and physical activity.

The findings showed that consumption of baked or broiled fish on a weekly basis was positively associated with gray matter volumes in several areas of the brain. Higher grey matter brain volume correlates with increased cognitive function and is commonly used to determine progression of degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's. Maintaining grey matter volume over a five-year period lowers risk of Alzheimer's disease by five-fold.

Dr. Raji concluded: "Consuming baked or broiled fish promotes stronger neurons in the brain's gray matter by making them larger and healthier… this simple lifestyle choice increases the brain's resistance to Alzheimer's disease and lowers risk for the disorder." Eating fatty fish at least once per week (preferably at several meals) improves working memory and allows people to focus on tasks that commit information to short-term memory, thus improving cognitive function and lowering the risk from Alzheimer's disease.

Despite the myriad of evidence gained over the years showing that aspartame is a dangerous toxin, it has remained on the global market with the exception of a few countries that have banned it. In fact, it continued to gain approval for use in new types of food despite evidence showing that it causes neurological brain damage, cancerous tumors, and endocrine disruption, among other things.

History of aspartame

The details of aspartame’s history are lengthy, but the point remains that the carcinogen was illegitimately approved as a food additive through heavy-handed prodding by a powerful corporation with its own interests in mind. Practically all drugs and food additives are approved by the FDA not because science shows they are safe but because companies essentially lobby the FDA with monetary payoffs and complete the agency’s multi-million dollar approval process.

Aspartame was an accidental discovery by James Schlatter, a chemist who had been trying to produce an anti-ulcer pharmaceutical drug for G.D. Searle & Company back in 1965. Upon mixing aspartic acid and phenylalanine, two naturally-occurring amino acids, he discovered that the new compound had a sweet taste. The company merely changed its FDA approval application from drug to food additive and aspartame was born.

G.D. Searle & Company first patented aspartame in 1970. An internal memo released in the same year urged company executives to work on getting the FDA into the “habit of saying yes” and of encouraging a “subconscious spirit of participation” in getting the chemical approved.

G.D. Searle & Company submitted its first petition to the FDA in 1973 and fought for years to gain FDA approval, submitting its own safety studies that many believed were inadequate and deceptive. Despite numerous objections, including one from its own scientists, the company was able to convince the FDA to approve aspartame for commercial use in a few products in 1974, igniting a blaze of controversy.

In 1976, then FDA Commissioner Alexander Schmidt wrote a letter to Sen. Ted Kennedy expressing concern over the “questionable integrity of the basic safety data submitted for aspartame safety”. FDA Chief Counsel Richard Merrill believed that a grand jury should investigate G.D. Searle & Company for lying about the safety of aspartame in its reports and for concealing evidence proving the chemical is unsafe for consumption.
