Suboptimal Breastfeeding Kills Over 1 Million Infants A Year

A recent review published in the journal Archives of Disease In Childhood titled, "Marketing breast milk substitutes: problems and perils throughout the world," revealed a disturbing statistic:

Currently, suboptimal breastfeeding is associated with over a million deaths each year and 10% of the global disease burden in children

The review also highlighted an embarrassing fact of US history:

On 21 May 1981 the WHO International Code of Marketing Breast Milk Substitutes (hereafter referred to as the Code) was passed by 118 votes to 1, the US casting the sole negative vote. The Code arose out of concern that the dramatic increase in mortality, malnutrition and diarrhoea in very young infants in the developing world was associated with aggressive marketing of formula. The Code prohibited any advertising of baby formula, bottles or teats and gifts to mothers or 'bribery' of health workers.[1]

The International Code of Marketing Breast Milk Substitutes, which the US thwarted the global consensus on, established an international health policy framework for breastfeeding promotion, as well as recommending restrictions on the marketing of infant formula.

Could the lack of US support and implementation for breastfeeding initiatives such as this be a major factor in why our nation, 30 years later, has one of the worst infant mortality rates in the developed world (29th), tying Slovakia, but lagging behind Cuba?[2]

Presently, less than 5% of U.S. infants are born in "Baby-Friendly" hospitals, "a global designation that indicates best practices in maternity care to support breastfeeding mothers," according to the CDC’s website.[3]  This is one reason why only 14.8% of infants born in the US are exclusively breastfed at 6 months, and only 35.% at 3 months. Conversely, 25.4% are never breastfed, with 24.5% of breastfed infants receiving formula before 2 days. [4]

According to statistics from 2010, the United States and Western Europe account for 33% of the global infant formula market, which consists of 2,260,000,000 lbs of product worth 11.5 billion US dollars. [5]

And here is a major point in need of differentiation: is the aforementioned global burden of infant mortality associated solely with a lack of breastfeeding, or, rather, does it not also reveal the potential lethality of the milk substitutes being provided and promoted?

We have already investigated some rather disturbing problems with common infant formulas on the market, including so-called "USDA organic" formula which contain highly toxic chemicals advertised as "nutrients," in three previous articles: 1) Why Is Pesticide Used As An Ingredient In Infant Formula?  2) Chemicals As "Nutrients" In "USDA Organic" Infant Formula  3) Infant Formula For Disaster. Clearly, considering the research, infant formula is not benign. If you would like to view the first-hand studies on over 50 adverse health effects associated with infant formula consumption, visit our infant formula page.

Over 70 years ago, Dr. Cicely Williams, a British pediatrician who worked in poverty-stricken areas of Africa and Asia, penned these words:

If your lives were embittered as mine is, by seeing day after day this massacre of the innocents by unsuitable feeding, then I believe you would feel as I do that misguided propaganda on infant feeding should be punished as the most criminal form of sedition, and that those deaths should be regarded as murder

In her book "Milk and Murder," Dr. Cicely was one of the first physicians to draw attention to the corporate take-over of breastfeeding through its shameless, and deadly promotion of infant formula as a substitute even when medically unnecessary.

So, what if it is true that over one million infants die every year from a combination of the toxic effects of infant formula and a lack of breast milk? Where are the conventional pediatricians and CDC focusing, given this reality? Vaccines, vaccines … and more vaccines.

As Dr. Linda Folden Palmer wrote, in her book The Deadly Influence of Formula:

Pediatricians spend much time frightening parents with something like a 1 in 100,000 combined risk from vaccine-preventable diseases when parents question the utility and safety of vaccines…. Yet these very same professionals offer formula samples with the other hand – when the magnitude of health risks associated with the use of formula is 500 times greater.

Written and unwritten policy now dictates that vaccination, e.g. the administration of the hepatitis B antigen shot on the first day of life, is more important than encouraging women to breast feed. Were breastfeeding a priority, health authorities would discourage the unnecessary use of epidurals, birth induction with synthetic oxytocin (Pitocin), and subsequently far higher rates of Cesarean section, all of which reduce the likelihood of initial infant-mother bonding, initial latching on and long-term breastfeeding success.

We must go higher up the food chain to the World Health Organization (WHO) in order to understand where these policies are coming from. The WHO claims (2008) that "1.5 million of deaths among children under 5 years were due to diseases that could have been prevented by routine vaccination. This represents 17% of global total mortality in children under 5 years of age."[6] Even if these figures were true – and corroborating support for the WHO's statement, vetted through independent scientific bodies like the Cochrane Database Review, are conspicuously absent – it would not surpass in statistical significance breastfeeding as a means to reduce morbidity and mortality in infants.

Instead, we find vaccine researchers and proponents proposing the delaying of breastfeeding to "improve" vaccine responses. Why? Because vaccines actually induce a disease state (i.e. unnaturally elevated antibodies in response to synthetic antigens and adjuvants) that breast milk and breastfeeding attenuate. The breast and its milk therefore become the symbolic enemy of the transhumanist vaccine agenda. In truth, the vaccines further add to the burden of infant mortality and morbidity in ways that the CDC will not acknowledge as a matter of principle; despite the supporting body of clinical evidence on vaccine-associated adverse health effects, which have grown to disturbing proportions.

Ultimately, it is natural birth and breastfeeding that will ensure the health of each and every upcoming generation. The more we attempt to supplant natural sources of nourishment, as well as displacing natural immunity in favor of  synthetic vaccines, we provide the supposedly missing explanation for why autism spectrum disorders, childhood cancers, and a score of other now common diseases that afflict our youngest on a truly epidemic scale, are now the norm and not the exception.

The Kerrville Folk Festival – Tuesday Night at Threadgill’s Theater

by Ben Taylor

The Kerrville Folk Festival Tuesday night featured an acoustic lineup of female singers and songwriters including Susan Gibson, Elizabeth Wills, Rebecca Loebe, and Paula Nelson. Each artist took a turn singing their songs in a ‘round robin’ format in the covered but ‘open air’ venue of The Threadgill Theater.

Susan Gibson, CMA award-winning songwriter of “Wide Open Spaces”, interjected her dry wit—but very funny sense of humor into her performance, playing songs about her life’s experiences. One particularly memorable song was about herself as a young girl trying so hard, but in vain to measure up to the President’s physical fitness standards. Sorry, but I didn’t catch the name of the song. She did sing a song about a Gibson guitar salvaged from a fire called, Wood Wouldn’t Burn. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSMY0HuO7xo

Susan’s website: www.susanbibson.com

Performing second in the rotation was Elizabeth Wills, an accomplished singer/songwriter whose songs have been described as “confessional, with an angelic and viscerally intoxicating voice”. She has been named Female Vocalist of the year by the Ft. Worth Star Telegram and has been a Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Competition Finalist. Her powerful vocals and insightful songwriting were as refreshing as the cool Kerrville night. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3qfH_BF4tk

Elizabeth ’s website www.elizabethwills.com.

Rebecca Loebe from Atlanta, Georgia was the baby of the group, looking the part with a mass of beautiful black hair, an impish grin and mischievous eyes. Rebecca impressed an appreciative Kerrville audience on Tuesday night with her amazing range of voice, just as she did last year on NBC’s hit show ‘The Voice’ where Christina Aguilera told her, “I’d love to work with you, I think you have a really special gift.” Her double entendre writing style usually had an interesting twist at the end of the songs and after the first couple you started listening expectantly for where she was going to end up. My favorite this night was “Swallowed By The Sea”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXu0YPvySlc

Rebecca’s website: http://rebeccaloebe.com/.

Paula Nelson is simply one of my favorite singer/songwriters on the Texas music or on any music scene for that matter. She has a unique and distinctive voice that is rooted in the blues no matter what she sings and it works whether the song is a hard driving song like “Baby You’re Mean”, to a more traditional country like “Drink” or her contemplative “Be That As It May”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ds_f2NydbC0&feature=related

Paula’s website: www. paulanelsonband.com

Paula is every bit the consummate natural professional musician/singer/songwriter, having grown up onstage. I don’t mean to date her here, but the first time I remember seeing her was backstage at a concert with her dad Willie and Waylon Jennings in the 70s. I don’t even remember the year, but was either at the Texas Opry House or The Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin or maybe at a 4 th of July Picnic. Paula was a toddler and I was just a college kid myself at that time, but had friends (Candy Kicker for one) who were DJs at the old KOKE-FM and KVET in Austin. For me, watching Paula brings back memories of a very enjoyable time in my youth when as a kid in my late teens and early twenties I got to stand in the wings onstage with some of the legends of country music like Waylon, Willie, Kristofferson, Loretta Lynn, Haggard, Charlie Daniels, and on and on.

Paula was accompanied by her band’s lead guitar player, Landis Armstrong. Even though this night was the ladies night to shine, Landis quietly added some spice to the show with his hot licks and fast cords. In fact, he was interrupted several times with spontaneous applause. …Not meaning to get off track from the ‘ladies night’, but if you have not heard Landis play guitar (electric or acoustic), he is simply one of the best guitar players in Austin, or Texas for that matter …and I might even broaden that if put on the spot.

Dalis Allen, the Director of the Kerrville Folk Festival, was a great host as usual and scheduled a very nice show for the laid back, but enthusiastic audience. Just a short note on the low key and unassuming Dalis; as I have observed this event from year to year here at Kerrville, it is obvious that she is the golden thread that holds the fabric of this festival together. It is also obvious how much she is loved and respected by the performers who pass through these wooded hills of Quite Valley Ranch.

This next weekend is the last of this year’s Kerrville Folk Festival and has a full lineup featuring The Flyin A’s on Friday, Sara Hickman on Saturday, and Albert & Gage on Sunday night. For information and directions, go to http://www.kerrville-music.com/.

Bye Bye Insomnia – How To Ensure A Good Night’s Sleep

by: PF Louis

(NaturalNews) Recent polls from the National Sleep Foundation show that most Americans are averaging just under seven hours of sleep on weeknights and seven and one-half hours on weekends. Yet sleep researcher Dr. William C. Dement, MD, claimed we live in a "sleep sick nation."

Insomnia and Sleeplessness Protocol

He calls it a "hidden epidemic," because he considers this a major factor toward deteriorating physical and mental health in modern society. This is odd, since according to the hours logged by National Sleep Foundation surveys, sleep durations seem sufficient.

Further exploration has revealed that the quality of sleep, regardless of the quantity, is the prevailing factor for getting the sleep needed to recharge sufficiently.

A Miami Beach Mt. Sinai Hospital study on sleep measured brain waves of sleeping subjects and concluded that there are five cycles required for a beneficial night's sleep.

You need all five cycles of sleep
The first cycle is where daytime normal thought Beta waves are overcome by Theta waves, offering a relaxed light sleep. The second cycle is longer and slightly deeper with what are termed sleep spindles and K-complex waves. Both cycles involve a level of sleep that is easily awakened.

The third phase introduces deep sleep with Delta waves under 50%. This leads to the fourth phase with a further increase in Delta waves. Both the third and fourth sleep cycles are where the most regenerative and immune building processes take place.

Any interruption here sets one back to the first cycle, which may be one reason not enough people get into sufficient third and fourth cycle levels of sleep.

The fifth cycle is the REM (rapid eye movement) phase where most dreaming occurs. Dreaming can act as a relief valve for recent trying events.

If the third and fourth cycles are too light or non-existent you may feel the effects of fogginess and grogginess or anxiety and irritability upon awakening. Even worse, your immune system is gradually being weakened. That's something we can't afford in our toxic environment.

Safe measures to ensure quality sleep
First look to eliminate or minimize electro-magnetic fields (EMF) from your sleep environment. This might require keeping electric clocks and radios away from your head and pulling the plug on your WIFI modem or router.

Some people simply shut everything down by turning off the master circuit breaker every night! Drastic you say? Think about it. You are surrounded with electrical wiring that produces electromagnetic frequencies creating invisible effects on your brain, every hour of every day.

Your bedroom should be on the cool side, around 70 degrees Fahrenheit to replicate the lowered body temperature of sleep cycles three and four.

Another trick is to make your bedroom as dark as possible or use an eye shield. This encourages melatonin production, the hormone that induces sleep. Stimulating your mind late at night on the computer or watching TV inhibits sleep cycles.

If your restless mate or pet interrupts your sleep often, you might consider quarantining yourself if there is an available room. When irregular sounds abound, earplugs can be used.

Don't drink much liquid of any type before bed. This may avoid disruptive bathroom visits. Make your bathroom visit as you head for bed. Avoid caffeine some hours before retiring.

You can look into sleep inducing supplements. The most effective for many is melatonin. But some have issues with melatonin. So valerian could be substituted.

Other supplements that help relax but don't induce sleep directly are highly soluble magnesium powders that fizz with hot water or chamomile tea.

Using sleep deprivation as a method of torture includes leaving on lights and interrupting every few hours. Many of us are practicing self-torture without even knowing it. Instead, the opposite deep-sleep sanctuary should be nurtured for our sanity and health.

Vitamin C and The Big ‘C’

by: Craig Stellpflug

(NaturalNews) Vitamin C can curb the growth of cancer cells according to New Zealand scientists who provided hard evidence to the connection between the vitamin C and killing "the big C" (cancer). Vitamin C kills cancer because cancer cells do not have the enzyme catalase to break down hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into water and oxygen. Vitamin C tricks cancer cells into thinking it's sugar, so the cancer sucks it up. The result: the tumor is killed from the inside out by the resulting H2O2.

Immune Booster Protocol
Vitamin C

Yet back in the good ole USA, the FDA halted a vitamin C cancer study last year "pending a determination as to the off-label status of intravenous ascorbic acid". But that wasn't enough as they further attempted to ban all production of IV ascorbic acid for the use of cancer treatment. Same story looking back to 1753 when James Lind showed how to prevent and cure scurvy, with citrus fruits containing vitamin C. Unfortunately, 100,000 British Navy sailors died of scurvy until all the old "experts" had died off and were replaced by new-thinkers.

New ideas, even lifesaving ones are typically ignored by the resident experts even after the ideas are proven correct.

What is vitamin C?
Ascorbic Acid, AKA vitamin C, is a water-soluble vitamin known for boosting the immune system. But vitamin C is also an antioxidant that has been linked to younger-looking skin, contributes to the health of teeth & gums, is required for production of collagen and enhances the absorption of iron, B-12, folic acid, B-6 and vitamin E. A mere 100 mg a day of vitamin C given to an infant can even prevent SIDS! (Not one baby in over 20 years, given "Klenner's/Kalokerinos Ascorbate Therapy" is known to have died.)

How much vitamin C do we need?
Man does not make his own vitamin C and the RDA for an adult male is a meager 95 mg of vitamin C a day. That is insanely low when you consider that a 150 pound healthy mammal producing their own vitamin C will make up to 14,000 mg per day.

In a cancer battle the amount of oral vitamin C that is needed can be extreme. When the upper limit is reached it is accompanied by gas, bloating or loose stools. However, when vitamin C is given at a dosage below bowel tolerance, in a few days it can generally be brought up to a higher dose. Using bowel tolerance, start with 1,000 mg of vitamin C taken with each meal. A few days later, add 1,000 mg more to one meal making it 2,000 mg at one meal and 1,000 mg at the others. A few days later add an additional 1,000 mg to yet another meal and so on. Slow down on adding more vitamin C if you have gas, bloating or loose stools.

For high doses of oral supplement of vitamin C avoid the sodium and calcium C forms. Instead, look for ascorbic acid with rose hips or just plain ascorbic acid. Keep in mind that 90% of all the vitamin C now on the market in the USA is manufactured in China using GMO corn. Only buy corn free vitamin C to avoid GMO based vitamin C. For IV treatment you will need to find a naturopathic doctor in a state that allows IV vitamin C to be administered for cancer treatments.

Fluoride Attacks Your Brain Like A Piranha

by Charlie Brown Consumers for Dental Choice

Today, we celebrate the one year anniversary of the creation of Health Liberty – a nonprofit coalition formed by Mercola.com, National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC), Fluoride Action Network (FAN), Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT), Organic Consumers Association (OCA), and Consumers for Dental Choice, to help protect every American's freedom to make voluntary health choices.

Detox Protocol

Now we're taking a new approach: Highlighting the serious environmental health problems caused by dental mercury at the international level. Each partner-organization has a rich history of advocacy and active campaigning for change and better access to truly empowering health information. Over the past year, Consumers for Dental Choice has fought the battle against mercury dental fillings on many fronts, including:

  • Leading the World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry, the coalition at the mercury treaty sessions seeking to have the treaty address amalgam
  • Organizing strategic projects in West Africa, South Asia, and Australia
  • Sending strong regional teams of local non-profit leaders, dentists, and environmentalists to key meetings in Pretoria, Brussels, Kuala Lumpuer, and Brasilia
  • Commissioning the economics report "The Real Costs of Dental Mercury," which demonstrates that – counting the horrid environmental costs – amalgam is significantly more expensive (up to $87/filling) than mercury-free fillings
  • Winning a number of city resolutions supporting mercury-free dentistry at the local level
  • Obtaining consumer fact sheets to warn parents about neurological risks at the state level, and
  • Urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to stop dental mercury at the national level

What You Need to Know About Dental Amalgam

Amalgam was introduced in the Civil War era by the new American Dental Association, which won a political battle with the dentists of the day, who said using mercury in oral health care is malpractice. Today, more so than ever before, we know that dental amalgam, which is 50 percent mercury, a potent neurotoxin, can cause far-reaching problems, such as:

  • Exposure to mercury, the most toxic and more vaporous of the heavy metals, can harm your kidneys, and permanently damage your child's developing neurological system, and even kill your unborn child in the womb.
  • To implant amalgam, a dentist drills out healthy tooth matter in order to carve the crater necessary for amalgam placement – a primitive process that irreversibly weakens tooth structure. With a damaged tooth structure and with a metal-based filling that expands and contracts with temperature changes, teeth with amalgam are much more likely to crack years later, necessitating additional dental work.
  • Amalgam is a workplace hazard, especially for young female dental workers who experience an elevated rate of reproductive failures.
  • Dental mercury is the number one source of mercury in our wastewater, so dentists are handing the clean-up bill for their pollution to taxpayers and water ratepayers.

So why do 50 percent of US dentists still use mercury amalgams? In short, because it's profitable! Amalgams are quick and easy. Dentists make more money per chair per day implanting mercury. For factory-style dentistry, where the teeth represent dollar signs instead of part of a human being, dentists drill, fill, and bill. The term "drill, fill, and bill" is a joke aspiring dentists learn in dental school. Only the joke is on us and our children: they count their money, and we have a vaporous neurotoxin implanted an inch from our brains or our children's brains.

And of course, since amalgam damages tooth structure and cracks teeth, pro-mercury dentists will continue to profit from amalgam long after its initial placement. Teeth with amalgam require more dental work in the long term. To learn more, please listen to the short interview above that I previously gave with Dr. Mercola.

The Dental Mercury Crisis – A New Approach to an Old Problem

Dental mercury amalgam (which is fraudulently referred to as "silver" fillings, as it actually contains twice as much mercury as silver) currently accounts for between 313-411 tons of mercury entering the market every year. The demand for dental mercury is higher than the demand for almost all other mercury products – more than lighting (only 120-150 tons), measuring devices (only 300-350 tons), and electrical devices (only 170-210 tons).  As other mercury products are being phased out, amalgam is fast becoming the largest source of mercury pollution from products.  For example, in the United States, dental offices are the second largest user of mercury.

This dental mercury eventually ends up in our environment, via one pathway or another. For example, dental mercury from amalgam pollutes:

  • Water via dental clinic releases and human waste (amalgam is by far the largest source of mercury in our wastewater). Bear in mind, just one drop of mercury in a lake would poison the lake to the extent that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would ban it from fishing.
  • Air via cremation, dental clinic emissions, sludge incineration, and respiration
  • Land via landfills, burials, and fertilizer.

Once in the environment, dental mercury converts to its even more toxic form, methylmercury, and becomes a major source of mercury in the fish you eat. The cost of cleaning up this environmental hazard is high – so high, in fact, that studies have concluded amalgam is "more expensive than most, possibly all, other fillings when including environmental costs."

But the cost of not cleaning up dental mercury from our environment is even higher. The environmental health effects of amalgam are well known, and have recently been reiterated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, stating that mercury causes brain damage and neurological problems, especially for children and the unborn babies of pregnant women.

With dental mercury entering the environment from multiple unsound pathways, phasing out amalgam and transitioning to non-mercury alternatives is the only way to reduce, and eventually eliminate, this significant source of mercury that threatens our environment and ultimately your, and your children's health.

Fighting Dental Mercury in Developing Nations

But mercury fillings are not just a problem in the United States. Dental mercury is being dumped in developing countries worldwide; and many in developing nations are starting to object as well.

One of the leading advocates for mercury-free dentistry in developing nations is Jeunes Volontaires pour l'Environnement; a non-governmental organization with a strong base in Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast). Recognizing the serious environmental impact of dental mercury – and the resulting environmental health problems felt by entire communities – Jeunes Volontaires pour l'Environnement partnered with Consumers for Dental Choice to launch the Amalgam-Free Africa Campaign.

Founding the Amalgam-Free Africa Campaign were leaders:

  • Dominique Bally, a chemical engineer

Born in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, Dominique Bally KPOKRO is a chemical engineer and specialist in food chemistry.  He obtained his engineering degree of the Professional University Center of the National University of Abidjan Cocody.

Dominique Bally is a world leader in the battle against mercury, participating in every negotiation session for the mercury treaty.  In 2010 Charlie Brown named him Vice president for Africa, World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry.   In 2011 he became, too, Co-Director of Africa Campaign against dental mercury in 2011.

Dominique Bally has extensive experience and particular expertise in food technologies. Having worked in a palm oil refinery, a sugar factory, and a soap factory.  Until a civil war in early 2011 shut down the nation's economy, Dominique was a process engineer in a cocoa factory in San Pédro.

An Eagle Scout, he is now an active adult Scout leader.  Since 2009 he has been a member of the National Team which leads Ivorian Scout Association; before then, he was responsible for training and youth programs at district and regional level.

As a chemist, Dominique provides needed expertise to Jeunes Volontaires pour l'Environnement as a volunteer.  He is Chief of the Department of Chemistry and Biodiversity. After losing his job due to war, he dedicated himself to the environmental question.  He is the representative of Jeunes Volontaires pour l'Environnement and Ivorian civil society at international meetings dealing with chemicals.   In 2012 he completed a study related to air monitoring to detect the presence of mercury in dental clinics, public hospitals and artisanal small scale gold mining sites in Côte d'Ivoire, using a spectrometer known as the Lumex device.

  • Ange Baimey, the leader of Jeunes Volontaires pour l'Environnement

Ange David BAIMEY has worked for the past six years on causes for the environment and for lasting change in the civil society of his West African nation of Côte d'Ivoire (the Ivory Coast).

Ange Baimey is the founder, and executive director, of Jeunes Volontaires pour l'Environnement (French for Young Volunteers for the Environment), an Ivory Coast nonprofit group.   Il is co-Director the Campaign for a Mercury-Free Africa .

Ange has a master's degree in socio-ethnology along with several certificates in sustainable development.  He was inspired to focus on the environment after the notorious dumping of toxins in Abidjan by a Dutch ship, Probo Koala.**   After this scandal made several members of his own family sick, he decided to commit his time and energy to defending children and youth against environmental dangers from pollution and pesticides.

An Eagle Scout, Ange is a member of the World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry, a member of the Committee of  Young Reporters of Mediaterre  (www .mediaterre.org), and the representative of civil society of Cote d'Ivoire at international climate change conferences.  Since 2010 is he has been in charge of coordinating the research on climate change and development for Africa's 20 francophone nations, which brings together 65 organizations from civil society in Africa and Europe.

** (Note by Charlie Brown:  Carrying a shipload of toxins, this ship's owners or captain decided, rather than dispose of them legally, which would have cost money, they chose to enter the harbor of Abidjan in the stealth of night and take barrels of toxins to low-income neighborhoods.  This horrid misdeed was not discovered immediately, until massive damage was done to human life and health.  This reckless and abhorrent disregard for human life by a criminal group of Europeans against innocent Africans energized the citizenry of Cote d'Ivoire.)

  • Charles Baimey, a media specialist

Born in Daloa, Côte d'Ivoire  (Ivory Coast) in 1985, Aubin Charles BAÏMEY holds a degree in social anthropology, and is certified in the field of Sustainable Development.   He is director of communications, Jeunes Volontaires pour l'Environnement, and – along with Ange Baimey and Dominique Bally – is co-director, Campaign for a Mercury-Free Africa.  Like them, too, he is an Eagle Scout.

For more than six years, Charles Baimey has been engaged in environmental causes.  In 2010, he helped host a meeting in Abidjan concerning the treaty on POPS (persistent organic pollutants), and there began the work in his nation to address heavy metals, notably mercury.  In September 2011, he participated in the African regional meeting in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, that was the prelude to the amalgam treaty.  The next month, he conducted a workshop on mercury-free dentistry in Bamako, Mali, an event focused on ending amalgam use for children and young women.

His work as communications chief has resulted in coverage of the mercury treaty in general, and the amalgam issue specifically, in several West African nations.

After substantial research, Charles produced a documentary on mercury-free dentistry, which includes interviews with government officials, a mercury-free dentist, and an environmentalist.  The film, in French, includes English subtitles.

  • Kouadio Florent Kouakou, a dentist and a dental instructor

Born in Abidjan (Côte D'Ivoire) in 1972, Dr. KOUAKOU Kouadio Florent is a dentist – a mercury-free dentist — and, since 2007, a faculty member at the school of dentistry, National University of Abidjan- Cocody.

Dr. Florent obtained his doctorate in dentistry at Abidjan in 2003.  He then obtained an advanced degree in anatomy and physiology at the Claude Bernard University in Lyon, France in 2004, and a degree in endodontics at the same university in 2006.

Since 2009 Kouadio has been technical and scientific advisor to Jeunes Volontaires pour l'Environnement (French for Young Volounteers for the Environment).

He is an active participant in the mercury treaty – participating in INC3 at Nairobi in 2011, then the African regional meeting in Pretoria in May 2012, and will attend INC4 in Montevideo in June-July 2012.  Charlie Brown notes that Dr. Florent is our French-speaking mercury-free dentist at the treaty talks – and that more nations use French as their national language than any other language.

Together with a team of volunteers, the Amalgam-Free Africa team leaders have:

  • Organized workshops on mercury-free dentistry in several West Africa nations
  • Recruited more leaders from other African nations
  • Produced a documentary featuring environmentalists, a dentist, and government officials from Africa – all calling for an end to dental mercury
  • Urged that dental mercury be addressed in the global mercury treaty currently being negotiated by the United Nations; and
  • Gained support from government officials in the region

A Worldwide Effort to Eliminate Mercury Filling

In February 2009, Obama endorsed negotiations for a new global treaty on mercury pollution. The most important issue today in the amalgam battle centers on this world mercury treaty. The United Nations has convened a series of five conferences to put together the environmental treaty on mercury, a treaty that represents a chance for the world to rid itself of amalgam, and rid dentistry of mercury. The treaty's central question: What are we going to do about the ever-growing problem of worldwide mercury contamination?

The first session was in June 2010, the second in Japan in January 2011, the third coming up in Africa and two more conferences will be held over the next three years. (View the first session report here.) The end-goal is the signing of a legally binding mercury treaty in 2013.

The new U.S. position calls for a "phase down" of mercury fillings, followed by an "eventual" phase out. The State Department's submission to the Mercury International Negotiation Committee also called for:

  • Educating patients and parents (about amalgam) in order to protect children and fetuses
  • Training of dental professionals on the environmental impacts of mercury in dental amalgams

This is an incredible turn of events that brings us one step closer to mercury-free dentistry for all, but the fight is far from over. The American Dental Association (ADA) still continues to give amalgam (mercury) fillings their seal of approval , and is among those pro-mercury forces who are asking for an exemption to the worldwide environmental treaty on mercury so they may keep selling amalgam indefinitely. The ADA web site still states:

"Used by dentists for more than a century, dental amalgam is the most thoroughly researched and tested restorative material among all those in use. It is durable, easy to use, highly resistant to wear and relatively inexpensive in comparison to other materials. For those reasons, it remains a valued treatment option for dentists and their patients."

Health Liberty is for Everybody!

In the United States, we face multiple challenges in the battle against mercury fillings, from government inertia, to industry's monopoly on the press, and the American Dental Association's (ADA) refusal to abandon this primitive nineteenth century mercury product. The Amalgam-Free Africa team faces all of this too, and more, as the Côte d'Ivoire has been ravaged by civil war, high unemployment, and civil unrest over the past several years. Still, they press on, because they firmly believe that everyone – including the people of developing nations – has a right to mercury-free dentistry.

Their work goes to show that health liberty is for everybody, not just the elite few. Every person has a right to know the risks a product poses to their own health, and the risk it poses to the health of their community and environment. And every person has the right to choose to avoid these risks.

How To Fight Water Fluoridation In Your City

by: Ethan A. Huff

(NaturalNews) Water fluoridation has become quite the hot-button political issue in America today, especially as the pro-fluoride establishment is increasingly being forced to address the myriad of emerging scientific evidence highlighting the dangers of fluoride. But many city officials and legislators continue to remain largely unaware of, and in some cases willfully defiant against, the truth about fluoride.

Detox Protocol

Still entrenched in the political framework of public health today is the idea that artificially fluoridating public water supplies prevents tooth decay and lessens the overall costs associated with dental treatments. This flawed ideology dates back to about the 1930s when the aluminum mining and smelting industries concocted a way to dispose of their unwanted fluoride chemical byproducts by pushing them on the unsuspecting masses as a remedy for tooth decay.

Though science has never backed up this and many other claims made by the pro-fluoride lobby, fluoridation remains a blindly-accepted public health measure throughout America today. And yet at the same time, things are also starting to change as citizens, health officials, and former fluoride advocates learn the facts about fluoride and begin spreading the truth (http://www.esterrepublic.com/Archives/dyates2.html).

Hundreds of North American communities have axed fluoride from their water supplies in recent decades (http://www.fluoridealert.org/communities.aspx), and many more are in a position to follow suit if science can ultimately break the political stronghold that is holding on for dear life to the fluoride myth.

Some practical ways you can help fight water fluoridation in your own community
• Send information about fluoride's dangers to your local city council members and mayor. City councils are often the ones who decide whether or not to fluoridate, or continue fluoridating, municipal water supplies. Taking the time to present information at local council meetings and directly with council members can go a long way in ending fluoridation, which is exactly what happened last year in Fairbanks, Alaska.

• Contact your local environmental board and express opposition to fluoride, and also request a fresh investigation into the science behind fluoridation. Many areas continue to fluoridate their water supplies simply because that is what they have always done. But gaining a fresh perspective from an independent fluoride investigation committee can be an effective solution for reforming public consensus on the fluoride issue.

This approach was successful in Juneau, Alaska, where a fluoride commission was established specifically to study the science behind fluoride and compile a report for the city council to review. Based on the commission's findings, it was recommended to the council that the city stop fluoridating its water supply, which came into effect in 2007 (http://www.juneau.org).

• Hand out fluoride literature to your friends, family, neighbors. Most people have no idea that the fluoride chemicals added to their water have been designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a toxic waste product responsible for causing bone fractures, dental fluorosis, and other conditions (http://water.epa.gov). They also likely do not know that the official Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for sodium fluoride, a common fluoride additive, lists the chemical as carcinogenic, as well as mutagenic, and toxic to bodily organs and the reproductive system.

"All our thyroids are screwed up," says Dr. Ted Norris, who holds a Ph.D. in neuro-endocrinology, about the consequences of fluoride exposure. "[Fluoride] causes chronic obesity. It causes fatigue. It causes depression. It causes lack of energy, and that's not even to get into the osteosarcomas and the hip replacements. It's devastating. I think it's worse than lead. It's a shame."

Alabama Adopts First Official State Ban on U.N. Agenda 21

by  Alex Newman

Alabama became the first state to adopt a tough law protecting private property and due process by prohibiting any government involvement with or participation in a controversial United Nations scheme known as Agenda 21. Activists from across the political spectrum celebrated the measure’s approval as a significant victory against the UN “sustainability” plot, expressing hope that similar sovereignty-preserving measures would be adopted in other states as the nationwide battle heats up.

The Alabama Senate Bill (SB) 477 legislation, known unofficially among some supporters as the “Due Process for Property Rights” Act, was approved unanimously by both the state House and Senate. After hesitating for a few days, late last month Republican Governor Robert Bentley finally signed into law the wildly popular measure — but only after heavy pressure from activists forced his hand.

Virtually no mention of the law was made in the establishment press. But analysts said the measure was likely the strongest protection against the UN scheme passed anywhere in America so far. The law, aimed at protecting private property rights, specifically prevents all state agencies and local governments in Alabama from participating in the global scheme in any way.

"The State of Alabama and all political subdivisions may not adopt or implement policy recommendations that deliberately or inadvertently infringe or restrict private property rights without due process, as may be required by policy recommendations originating in, or traceable to 'Agenda 21,' " the law states, adding a brief background on the UN plan hatched at the 1992 “Earth Summit” in Rio de Janeiro.

The people of Alabama acting through their elected representatives — not UN bureaucrats — have the authority to develop the state’s environmental and development policies, the official synopsis of the law explains. Therefore, infringements on the property rights of citizens linked to “any other international law or ancillary plan of action that contravenes the Constitution of the United States or the Constitution of the State of Alabama” are also prohibited under the new measure.

Of course, as the law points out, the UN has enlisted a broad array of non-governmental and inter-governmental organizations in its effort to foist Agenda 21 on the world — most notably a Germany-based group called ICLEI, formerly known as the International Council of Local Environmental Initiatives. But the new measure takes direct aim at that problem, too: “the State of Alabama and all political subdivisions may not enter into any agreement, expend any sum of money, or receive funds contracting services, or giving financial aid to or from” any such entities, as defined in Agenda 21 documents.

“This bill, that would bar the state from taking over private property without due process, is intended to shelter Alabamians from the United Nations Agenda 21, a sustainable development initiative that some conservatives see as a precursor for the creation of a world government,” explained Alabama GOP Executive Director T.J. Maloney when announcing that it had been signed into law. The Republican National Committee (RNC) adopted a resolution earlier this year blasting the global scheme and urging policy makers to oppose it, and state parties have followed suit.

Public support for the Alabama law was overwhelming and bipartisan as citizens who had been terrorized by Agenda 21-linked schemes targeting their private property spoke out. But according to analysts and state Republican Party officials cited in press reports, Gov. Bentley was originally hesitant to sign the bill — almost certainly due to concerns over the potential loss of some federal funding.

The U.S. Senate, of course, has never formally ratified Agenda 21. But the executive branch — in conjunction with accomplices at the international, state, and local levels — has for two decades been quietly attempting to impose the plan on Americans by stealth, mostly using deceptive terms like “Smart Growth” and “Green.” And proponents of the global scheme consistently threaten that states seeking to protect citizens from the UN plot could end up losing some federal funds.

“Every time you take a dollar of federal money, there’s strings attached,” explained Ken Freeman, chairman of the Alabama-based group Alliance for Citizens Rights (ACR), an organization that fought hard to ensure that the Governor signed the bill into law. “We were originally walking soft on this issue, to tell you the truth, because when things were going our way, why change anything?”

But when Gov. Bentley did not immediately approve the bill, Freeman told a reporter, ACR turned the activism up a notch, urging citizens to contact the Governor’s office and express their support for the measure. The grassroots pressure paid off: Alabama became the first state to be officially shielded by law from UN-linked anti-property rights scheming.

“It seems that Agenda 21 does actually bring people together in communities — just not in the way the U.N. had hoped for,” remarked Justice Gilpin-Green in a column for the conservative site Townhall, citing Freeman and other instrumental supporters of the effort. “Hopefully other states can mirror Alabama’s determined nature in passing their anti-Agenda 21 legislation. It was citizen awareness and direct action that finally brought about the needed changes last week and that same awareness and action will be needed for the future of every other state.”

Legislative analysts said the bill, sponsored by GOP state Sen. Gerald Dial, was extremely well crafted: protecting citizens and individual rights from UN decrees in a simple, straightforward manner that Agenda 21 advocates would have a hard time criticizing. Liberty-minded organizations and lawmakers are already examining the measure for potential use as a model in other states currently struggling to expel the global scheme and its myriad tentacles.

“Alabama House Bill 618 [SB 477] is a large step towards protecting Alabamians against UN meddling. It protects the due process rights of Alabamians. It keeps Constitutional Law above International Law,” noted Jason Baker, a Montgomery-based conservative pundit with the Examiner. “Now state after state awakens to the threat it poses to freedom and sovereignty.”

Across America, Tea Party groups, liberty-minded Democrats, libertarians, and a broad coalition of activists have been turning up the heat on Agenda 21. Tennessee, for example, adopted a bipartisan state resolution slamming the UN scheme as an “insidious” and “socialist” plot that is completely at odds with American traditions of limited government, individual freedom, private property, and self-governance under the Constitution. Numerous other states are pursuing similar measures.

A bill similar to Alabama’s seeking a complete ban on Agenda 21 and unconstitutional UN “sustainability” efforts in Arizona was approved overwhelmingly in the state Senate. The legislation died in the state House even after clearing several hurdles, however, when the legislative session ended before a final vote could be taken. New Hampshire is reportedly working on a bill to ban Agenda 21 that sailed through the state House last month.

Meanwhile, local governments across America — under intense pressure from citizens and activist groups — are slowly awakening to what critics call the “dangers” of the UN scheme. Dozens of cities and counties have withdrawn from ICLEI in recent years, and as awareness continues to grow, that trend is expected to accelerate.

The UN, however, is doubling down on its controversial plan. In June, governments from all over the world will be meeting in Rio de Janeiro for the so-called “Conference on Sustainable Development” — known as Rio+20 for short. According to official documents released by the global body, the summit, headed by Chinese Communist Sha Zukang, will be seeking to dramatically transform human civilization under the guise of environmentalism.

Production, education, consumption, individual rights, and even people’s thoughts will all be targeted under the global plan to create a so-called “green economy,” the UN admitted. But with the tidal wave of opposition in America growing stronger every single day, analysts expect fierce U.S. opposition — if not from the Obama administration, at least from the increasingly outraged citizenry.

Coke May Require Cancer Label If Ingredients Not Changed

by: Ethan A. Huff

(NaturalNews) Back in January, the state of California added to its list of cancer-causing chemicals an ingredient commonly used in flavored soda beverages, which has sent major shockwaves throughout the processed food industry. And according to numerous reports, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and even Whole Foods are having to alter their soda beverage recipes in order to avoid being required by the state of California to label their products as causing cancer.

Immune Protocol

The cancer-causing chemical in question is 4-methylimidazole, or 4-MI, a byproduct formed during the production of caramel color, an additive commonly used in processed cola beverages. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), caramel color produced using ammonia or ammonia-sulfites creates both 4-MI and 2-MI (2-methylimidazole), which have been shown to be carcinogenic (http://cspinet.org/new/pdf/caramel_coloring_petition.pdf).

CSPI last year petitioned the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to remove its "Generally Recognized as Safe" (GRAS) status from caramel colors produced in this way, but the FDA refused, insisting that caramel color with 4-MI is safe. But Californians apparently believe otherwise, as they overwhelmingly voted to have 4-MI added to the list of toxic substances covered under California's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, also known as Proposition 65.

As a result, corporate beverage giants are having to change the way they produce caramel color in order to maintain levels of 4-MI that are below the threshold limit. In the process, they are having to spin the story publicly to make it seem as though 4-MI is not dangerous, and that altering the beverage formulas will not change the taste, color, or consistency of their beverages.

But a 2008 study published in the journal Archives of Toxicology found that 4-MI is toxic, and that it is linked to causing clonic seizures, hyperactivity, impaired gait, chronic inflammation, focal fatty change in the liver, carcinoma, leukemia, and adenoma, among other conditions. The study essentially confirmed that 4-MI is carcinogenic (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17619857).

If it is possible to make caramel color without 4-MI, why have beverage producers continued to knowingly produce the toxic variety?
In a public statement, Coca-Cola denied that 4-MI is carcinogenic, and openly called the cancer warning mandate "scientifically unfounded." But the science speaks for itself, particularly in beverage products made by Coca-Cola and PepsiCo that have been shown to have high levels of both 2-MI and 4-MI. CSPI covered this extensively in its petition to the FDA:
http://cspinet.org/new/pdf/caramel_coloring_petition.pdf

It is no big secret, in other words, that 4-MI is an "undesirable" byproduct of the caramel color manufacturing method long-used by both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. And yet these companies have continued to rely on this method, despite obvious awareness about its toxicity, even though less-toxic methods were most obviously a viable alternative.

The CSPI report names Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group Inc.'s Dr. Pepper, and Whole Foods' 365 Cola as having unsafe levels of 4-MI that will have to be reformulated. The same report says the amounts of 4-MI contained in these beverages before the reformulation is responsible for causing roughly 15,000 cancers in the U.S. every year.
